Re: New USDA hardiness map
Best map I've seen yet. It's 5A for me in the Champlain Valley.

Re: New one needing ID
Thanks, anttisepp. I do believe that's the one. But such a long name for a small cactus!

Re: New one needing ID
This little guy finally bloomed, but the flower never opened fully in this intense heat we're experiencing. I've attached a photo and, as you can see, the flower was a brilliant red. I am now convinced it belongs in the Rebutia/Aylostera group, but I've not found any photos of any that clump with su...

Re: New one needing ID
I am continuing to look for possibilities, and I happened upon Frailea. Is that possible? It looks more like that genus than Rebutia, but I still found nothing matches closely, whether it's the short, closely-held spines, the color, or the offsets.

New one needing ID
When I found this at my local garden center, I thought it was a Rebutia or a Sulco..., but I can't find anything that comes close to matching. For referencing the size, it is in a 2-inch pot. If anyone has an idea, I'd appreciate hearing from you. Thanks!

Re: New to me
Yes, I think so. I had one several years ago but it was bigger and because of that looked different. But now that I think back, I can see the resemblance. I hardly expected to find a Thelocactus at my local nursery. Thanks, greenknight!

Re: Echinopsis sp.?
It has amazing, very large white nocturnal flowers. Mine reliably flowers every summer. And I've never seen any pests on it.

New to me
We had a miserable Winter in Vermont. No, it wasn't too cold...it was actually too mild. Most of my cacti in the greenhouse never went dormant. And I didn't want to water them because that would just encourage them to continue to grow, I thought. I lost over two dozen cacti. I won't try to replace t...

Re: Root fungus?
What concerns me is what looks like bits of pumice or perlite. In both pictures they are clustered around the base of the plant. As I said, they are
very tiny. Your suggestions of cleaning them off, washing the cactus, inspecting/trimming the roots, and drying it make sense. Thanks.

Root fungus?
I had occasion to dig out from a shallow planter a small Echinopsis ancistrophora ssp arachnacantha that finally died. When I saw the other two E. ancistrophora arachnacantha from the same planter, there were these tiny round things smaller than the head of a pin around the base and in the roots of ...

Re: new Gymno that just bloomed today
Thanks, 'nachtkrabb'. I just checked the site and it looks like it hasn't been active in years. I'm wondering if it's still accepting photos. I realize it's a herculean task!

'Loamy' soil
I have often been confused by the terms applied to cactus soils. I understand mineral and organic soils and, I think, soils with peat vs. peat moss. But when a cactus soil recipe calls for a 'loamy' soil, what exactly does it mean? To me loam has always meant a rich, dark, organic soil. But I know n...

Re: new Gymno that just bloomed today
quehlianum I looked up the listing and yup...bingo! I can explain why I couldn't find it at first when I searched CactiGuide listings. I don't have many hours to spend on cacti per day. I have a nice collection but it's taken years to build. Yes, I've lost many along the way, but I keep trying...an...
