Re: New Agaves (hybrids & other)
Nearly forgot (okay - I forgot) to post this photo of one of my Agave wocomahi that I grew from seed. Love those teeth! This one is protected in the greenhouse with some sister seedlings, whilst others are facing the elements. The seed was collected by someone near Cascada de Basaseachic, a famous 8...

Re: New Agaves (hybrids & other)
Now dwindling in supply are the Agave scabra x F2 La Escondida seedlings. There is a great range in form amongst these. One thing most of them have is the unusual condition of at least a few bifid teeth. Why? I dunno. Here are two that I selected. This first one I selected because it was the first t...

Re: New Agaves (hybrids & other)
This is my second selection from the Agave 'Huasteca Giant' batch. As I said, there are plenty of beauties remaining to be had.

Re: New Agaves (hybrids & other)
The plants for sale as Agave 'Huasteca Giant' (from seed purchased from Rare Palm Seeds as Agave ovatifolia 'Huasteca Giant') appear rather a lot like Agave montana, but with a bit of Agave ovatifolia blended in. Here are two that I selected, though there are a lot of beautiful plants amongst this b...

Re: New Agaves (hybrids & other)
This Agave ovatifolia seedling is scabrous.
Amongst the "Agave ovatifolia" batch, most are different from what you'd expect of "typical" A. ovatifolia. When I see them - I want them all, but do not have the luxury of space to accommodate such desire.

Re: New Agaves (hybrids & other)
Amongst these same tray of seedlings I found two other that caught my attention as unusual.
This one had nice spade-shaped leaves.

New Agaves (hybrids & other)
There are still interesting things to be found amongst seedlings, and my favorite place to look is at Plant Delights Nursery. Here's why. Amongst the Agave ovatifolia trays I found this (there are were at least three others a few days ago). It appears (a guess) to be a hybrid with Agave bovicornuta....

Re: Favorite Echinocereus?
Hey, Peter, Great topic. Though I have not grown all the Echinocereus types, my favorites are the E. engelmannii - I LOVE the spines (lengths & colors) and the flowers. A close second are the E. coccineus types for their fantastic and varied flowers, different growth forms in size and spination,...

Re: Surviving winter!
Twice this winter we have been down to -13C (7 to 8F). A few feet in front of the greenhouse I have two Oreocereus celsianus in separate pots. One is about 20-inches tall, the other about 12-inches. So far both seem to have survived (three pots of Trichocereus schickendanztii , however, went to cact...

Re: Agaves and Cacti in Snow
John - That's great news about the Gymno's pulling through the summer. Here's some more great news - the parent plants pulled through 7F and more than 30 hours of freezing weather! As it is, my sister seedlings (of the seeds I sent you) are overwintering in my greenhouse. Hopefully by summer 2015 th...

Nice work - and thanks for sharing. Looks like you are right!
Good to see the OPUNTIADS website has made progress. It's been a while since I visited that remarkable website.

Re: Agaves and Cacti in Snow
Thanks! It is good to hear that you enjoyed the photos. A list of barrel cacti that have survived many cold and snowy winters and hot rainy summers in my North Carolina garden. Lowest temp so far: 7F (-13C). Denmoza rhodacantha Echinocactus texensis Echinocereus triglochidiatus Gymnocalycium baldian...

Re: Agaves and Cacti in Snow
Like you, I find the that snow compliments the architecture of these plants - though I doubt they'd welcome the addition except as a blanket to deeper cold. Last night we hit 7F (-13C). I hope the Trichocereus formosa pull through. The agaves, I think, should be perfectly fine.
