Re: Eriosyce curvispina care

Yeah....I've been worrying about the dirt I put it in....especially since it's becoming fall/winter here and right now the dirt is moist. I'm assuming the cactus will go dormant so I've been doing everything in my power to try to get the dirt to dry out so that I don't kill it. This is always my pro...

Eriosyce curvispina care

I have just become the owner of an Eriosyce curvispina cactus and I adore it. But it seems it's almost impossible to find specific care information for it. I was wondering if anybody knew anything about this cactus and whether or not it had any special care requirements. I have one aloe that I've be...

My Aloe Blooms

I wasn't sure what category to put this post in. But I'm so happy to report that my Firebird Aloe has finally started opening it's blooms. I have been waiting all summer for this!! You can see the bottom two blooms have opened, with a lot more ready to bloom on top. http://i183.photobucket.com/album...

Paranoia about Heat

My little aloe plant lives on our kitchen windowsill and lately I've been setting it outside on the patio to make sure it's getting enough sun. Today I put my aloe outside and got busy doing other things and when I came back it was 107 degrees outside and my aloe was in full sun. I brought it in imm...

Yeah I guess I learned my lesson on this one. So much for trying to recreate winter.

Re: Why is sand bad??

Oh I guess I should elaborate. I don't mean potting a plant in pure sand, I'm talking about mixing it with other mediums. Like in the example cactus mix on this website, why can't sand be substituted for the pumice??

Why is sand bad??

I was hunting around the forum for info on repotting and soil types, and someone mentioned that sand was a death sentence for cacti. Why is that?? From my experience, sand drains easily, so shouldn't it be fine?? I'm planning on replanting an aloe plant I just bought, and while it's not a cactus, I ...

Re: What happened to my cactus??

Here's the thing, I "unpotted" the cactus today, and the roots were perfectly fine, beautiful. The cactus body had completely rotted away from the roots. It's impossible to know whether this rotting happened before or after the cactus died, but my vote is on before. The cactus was only in ...

Re: What happened to my cactus??

I gave strict instructions for the cactus not to be watered while it was in the fridge. So I don't think wet soil was the issue. Though it seems there's a general consensus that the cactus is dead. My research said the cactus was hardy to about 32 degrees and our fridge stays around 38, so I thought...

Firebird Aloe Care

I just bought a firebird aloe today. Unortunately it's a hybrid so it's been difficult to find care information for it. I've been able to fin general aloe care info, but it's not very detailed or helpful. Basically I'm wondering if aloe/succulent care is the same as cactus care (which is something I...

What happened to my cactus??

So about a year ago, I bought a healthy looking Notocactus Leninghausii. Everything went fine that summer and over winter (while I was at college) I got my parents to keep it in the refrigerator to give it that cold period to go dormant. They told me it looked fine all throughout that period and aft...

Growing Pineapple

So earlier this year my mom and I planted 2 pineapple tops. Now they're big and beautiful and green, but we're trying to figure out what to do with them for the winter. It gets to cold for them outside during the winter, even here in Georgia. Does anyone one here have experience with growing pineapp...

I've lived in GA my entire life so I can't really complain about the heat. It's like this every summer. It was 104 yesterday. And our heat goes well into September. We only had about a week of spring temps this year before it jumped up to the 90+ summer temps.
