Re: Pereskiopsis size for grafting

I don't mind out of character, I'd be glad to grow some freaks but don't have any stock that size (or at least nothing I would want to chop yet). I do have a bunch of myrtillocactus geometrizans seedlings I plan to use some day, maybe I'll graft some of those to get them to usable stock size faster....

Re: Pereskiopsis size for grafting

thanks Hana, yeah I wasn't intending to use anything woody for grafting but for now my stocks might not be quite ready for optimal growth, I'll give them some time to get leafier. maybe i'll experiment with grafting on an opuntia pad while i'm waiting

Pereskiopsis size for grafting

I've finally got a good amount of pereskiopsis cuttings rooted but they're still relatively small, maybe 5 inches tall or so with not a whole lot of leaves. At what point is the size ideal for grafting? I'm guessing they turn woody at some point, but until that point bigger would be better I assume?...

Re: Save the British plant pot!

There's a nursery near here that has a big bin of used pots that they sell for something like 5 cents each, or at least they did at some point. I brought up a few small ones and they told me to just take them for free. I always save pots except the really cheap plastic that breaks easily, like some ...

Re: Have not seen this one before...

I have nothing to add other than that is very weird looking and I've never run into something like that. Looks almost like scale insects but a little more frightening

Re: Are you this brave (or stupid)?

Apparently the hippos were supposed to eat invasive water hyacinth and also be farmed for meat. I could go for some hippo meat but yeah they never ended up going through with it, that would have probably been a disaster. This was way back in the day though so it probably seemed like a good idea

Re: supergodzilla seed growing

Looks good, nice germination rates. I may have to give this cactus-hobby brno person a try. The aztekiums look pretty big for 3 months old, I have a few ritteri sprouts but none of the hintonii came up. You'll be grafting a few of them I would guess?

Re: SOS rot prevention

Luckily you have an opuntia sp. there which doesn't follow the normal rules of cacti. It's good you got it a pot with drainage but they'll put up with pretty much any soil. Right now I've got a bunch of opuntia outside in near freezing temperatures getting soaked by rain. I wouldn't worry too much a...

Re: Are you this brave (or stupid)?

I probably am that stupid (the eating of cactus, not the jumping into them), those guys seem like fun

I heard there was a plan to introduce hippos into Florida at some point in history for some reason, that might have not ended well

Re: Share your pets here

Very nice cats, I'd like to have an occult black cat one day but half of my family is allergic. It'd probably sort out the mice that have been hanging around here too Here's my birds again, I've been letting them out of the cage once or twice a day to get some exercise. They're in the greenhouse so ...

Re: cosmo's grafts

awesome, best of luck to you. this lophophora diffusa is my best looking graft as of now, starting to show some nicely developed ribs and such. rsz_1rsz_20181113_144318.jpg also had success with my first parafilm experiment, with an astrophytum coahuilense. hasn't grown much yet but definitely conne...

Yeah it's probably been done by someone here on the forum at some point, as long as you're careful moving them it might turn out alright

Re: Paper towel method

They'd probably sprout but I wouldn't really recommend it.. unless you've got a huge surplus of trichocereus seeds to experiment with. I don't think they'd appreciate the transplanting from towel to soil process much

Re: supergodzilla seed growing

Yeah the rimacactus is new to me. I just ordered some SuccSeed packets like a week ago, otherwise I'd add some of those to the cart. Their website is closed for about a month though so maybe next year some time
