Re: Smallest seedlings used for grafts?

Yeah I don't think I'd go that far but I might try some relatively small ones rather than potentially losing some of the bigger seedlings. I'll check it out

Re: It's from water or lack of water?

Yeah you might have a point, check for mushiness. The top of the cactus looked so healthy I thought there was no problem, but better check just to be safe. If it's hard then it's corking/scarring and if it's soft you might have a bit of an issue

Smallest seedlings used for grafts?

Hello cactus people, I was just wondering how small a seedling people have attempted to graft. I've got lots of very young seedlings (about 2-3 weeks old) and some that are about half a year old or more. I'm thinking I'd probably have more success with the older seedlings, but I'd also kind of like ...

Re: What are you all reading?

That looks pretty good, I don't how likely the cactus thing is but I'd pick up a copy if he did write it (might check out the one you linked to too) (edit: actually I just bought it on amazon, it was $3.90 for the kindle so I thought I'd give it a read. Best of luck to your writer friend. Also I was...

Re: dormancy

I just read that the thread creator's location is in Texas, wouldn't most cacti do alright all year outside there? I know it gets below freezing sometimes but I think most cacti would feel right at home except maybe some of the ones that grow in the jungle. And yeah some plants can go as low as -40C...

Re: dormancy

If a cactus is inside all year (at room temperature?) it won't really go dormant and will probably end up with some elongated growth, unless you have a place that it can get lots of direct sunlight or some pretty strong grow lights

Re: Fastest seeds?

I'd guess something like a cereus or one of the columnar cacti, but which one I can't say. I don't know how fast opuntias grow from seed but they're hard to germinate and can take a long time to sprout. Actually I started some pereskia seedlings this year and they've grown considerably big, probably...

I only took grade 8 french but that appears to be an epiphyllum rather than a hylocereus

Re: Simple micro-grafts

Looks fun, that's what my table looked like a few weeks ago (30 something seed packets). More on the way of course. I got a good amount of williamsii x fricii to sprout, but probably won't be grafting them. I did finally get my parafilm in the mail today though, so I might be doing some other grafts...

Re: It's from water or lack of water?

Doesn't have anything to do with water I don't think, that's just something cacti do as they age (corking). Looks healthy to me, you may want to get it a bigger pot at some point though. Nice cactus :)

Re: Help with growing....

I use a pre-mixed cactus soil too but without adding any grit it's not ideal, I usually mix it about half and half with pumice which improves it a lot. I'd probably repot them in the next couple months or so but you could wait a bit longer than that without any problems. It's up to you if you want i...

Re: Help with growing....

They look pretty good, they've still got room to live in those pots for a while but what is the soil mix you have them in? Doesn't look like there's much grit/minerals in there, which might be stunting their growth a little. It looks like it might be coir which newly born seedlings can grow in fine ...

Re: Why is this happening to my Lithops.

I'd take it out of the pot and let the roots dry completely for a few days to try to salvage it.. might be too late but it's worth a try. I thought the soil was mostly mineral but it looks like there's some peat or some other organic material there, maybe try to add more grit to the mix. If the soil...

Re: Why is this happening to my Lithops.

Maybe it's something they do when the weather starts to cool down or something, I don't know, lithops are weird. Hopefully some of the more experienced lithops growers can help you out here
