Re: Hana's grafting in 2016/2017

What would happen if you removed the growth points of both plants but just chopping across? I'd imagine that there'd be a higher chance of forming a chimera then assuming the plants didn't just offset on separate sides.

Re: Meet the most expensive cactus

Haageocerus tenuis is of course Peruvian, Thanks for correcting me Dave, I think I got Chile and Peru confused! presumably they are distributed by the botanical garden there, and are an example of a rare species being made available by conservationists to collectors. I'm glad there is at least some...

Re: Meet the most expensive cactus

What kind of conservation efforts are there towards cacti in Chile in the first place? You'd hope that any government would clue into the fact that as a rare plant with a highly restricted habitat H. tenuis would merit some sort of conservation effort. As you said Dave, with climate change becoming ...

Re: Cactus rot

Therefore you would even need to sow seeds in a laboratory clean room to avoid that when sowing. If you open the bag if using "baggies" for seed raising to either sow them or look at them you automatically introduce pathogens. I often notice that seedlings that seem to be doing fine insid...

Re: Sowing Tephorcactus and others: advices needed

I've had really good germination on Austrocylindropuntia floccosa (which is said by some to be impossible to germinate) by sanding away the seed coat and little and soaking them in water. But, as others have said, there does't seem to be any particular "silver bullet" for these plants. My ...

Re: Cool echinopsis from seed

If you are looking for "proper" Echinopsis, then I personally wouldn't go for E. ferox. It has been included in Lobivia, and IMO I'd probably still label mine under Lobivia. As far as white flowers go for being a distinguishing feature for them, while a number do indeed have white flowers,...

Re: Lets get them correct.

Do you think could possibly get closeups for each of them? The second one from the left sure does look like a mihanovichii, but I can't really say for certain.

Re: Ariocarpus and Aztekium sowing medium

I have used a mix consisting of 50% pumice 25% crushed scoria 15% sharp sand and 10% organic matter (mostly composted bark) for Aztekium and Ariocarpus with pretty good success. As Aiko said, Aztekium need to be kept in a sterile sealed environment until they are big enough to be able to withstand s...

Re: Mammillaria bertholdii from seeds - tips

I'd imagine that success in germinating these cryptocarpic species requires similar things. With that in mind this topic http://cactiguide.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=20291&hilit=mammillaria+theresae+seeds may be of some use. The member seemed to have worked out a fairly successful method...

Re: minimum temp for cacti

I've had plants from all of those genera in my unheated greenhouse survive down to -1. I imagine that they'll do fine for you at -2. The only plants I'd be concerned about are the Notocacti as some of them come from tropical Brazil, so would probably be less cold hardy. I'd recommend looking up your...

Re: Germination Time

As other people has said, if there's no sign of life by now then the seeds were probably bad. I would still keep the pot for a while though, there is a chance the seedlings could still pop up. Last year I sowed some Turb flaviflorus and got no germination for a couple of months and figured it was wo...

Re: The windowsill adventure of my seeds

Your seedlings look so great! I'm jealous of your herrerae seedlings as I ordered some from succseed, but by the time i'd ordered they'd sold out! Don't worry about the pulchellus being slow, I have some 2 year old seedlings that are easily half the size of yours! I think it's fair to say that your ...

The first plant looks like Mamm boscasana IMO. Mammillaria baumii doesn't have central spines at all (at least I have yet so see any in my 10 odd plants).
