North central Arizona habitat
First of all, would like to clarify that this forum is intended for places where cacti grow, if I have it right. Botanical gardens and habitat, in particular. There is a separate forum for threads related to purchase cacti and succulents. Not that this sort of thing is all that important, but there ...

Re: Unknown cactus
The flower seems like a Ferocactus flower to me, as do the spines. Interesting clumping habit. Not sure what it is. Do you have any more information on it?

Re: Opuntia englemanii in S Utah?
You're welcome! I get a lot of mileage out of SEInet, as flawed as it still is at times due to a tangled history of names.

Re: What's in a name? ..........
There is a variety of molecular work that can provide important information on how plants are related, but there are also some confusing aspects to molecular studies and some limitations involved. Perhaps the simplest approach is to use ploidy to try to distinguish between morphologically similar or...

Re: Opuntia englemanii in S Utah?
I checked on SEInet and saw no herbarium records for engelmannii in Utah. But then I investigated a few individual records, some of which were called Opuntia phaeacantha var. discata, which was Benson's name for engelmannii. There's also a few from that general area that have been determined to be e...

My guess would be chlorotica? Or maybe a cultivar.

Re: Escobaria kreckii
Ha, well, keep us posted. SB has been selling henricksonii for a long time. Nice plants that form a caudex, unusual for Escobaria.

Re: Escobaria kreckii
As far as I can see, your plant is not even close to Escobaria kracikii, which is the same as Coryphantha kracikii. It looks like henricksonii to me. (as Dan mentioned above, synonym with chihuahuensis).

Re: peterb's 2014
maybe! Echinofossulocactus can be devilishly hard to ID with 100% certainty. I bought the plant from Brack, however, at the NM C and S Society show and sale about 9 years ago, and his names are usually good. It looks like there are a few different spine forms, ranging from wildly long (sometimes cal...

Re: Some questions relating to Opuntia robusta
Interesting observation regarding the plant labeled at Opuntia martiniana at the Desert Botanical Garden. I have seen it many times and haven't questioned the ID but I can get a look at the accession info for the plant and double check it. I agree, very different morphology from Marc Beckstrom's pla...
