Chicago Overwintering Cacti?
I'm curious, I've been trying to find out what would be the best way for me to overwinter my cacti in the winter. Up until recently when I've started really taking this seriously, I've never thought to try to put the plants into hibernation. I am interested in the long term health of my cacti but I'...

Re: Old Espostoas?
I know exactly what you mean. Sometimes the list of things to do gets so big that all I can do is stand there and not know what to do. It is surprising though how much growth a cactus can do in such a small pot, or with so little roots. Do you know if there's any reason behind that? Something to do ...

Re: Old Espostoas?
Those are gnarly. So little pots for a columnar. Does repotting worry you for any reason? Or do they just do well enough in their pots, that it doesn't warrant it?
I really appreciate the post. Something about tall columnars in pots is just appealing to me.

Re: Cacti Places In Illinois
There's also the Garfield conservatory, but I've not been there so I don't know what it is like. Looks smaller than the Chicago Botanic Garden's collection from the pictures I've seen online.

Re: Cacti Places In Illinois
You can look at plants at the Chicago Botanic Garden. They've got a good selection of cacti and other succulents. It's nice to look at plants in real life up close. Not really places that sell cacti though. I think they have a plant sale at the botanic garden some time in the year but I've never bee...

Thanks for sharing those pictures CHman, that's a really interesting crest/monstrose behind the Espostoa. Have you got a very large collection outside?

This is the size of the Tephrocactus seedling. It's only a month old. Are we on the same page? Is it good for it to come out of the bag now?

Matucana aurantiaca?
Howdy folks.
I stumbled upon pictures of M. aurantiaca online. I'd think this is the same plant, no?
The only thing that I can see is maybe it has less spines than the M. aurantiaca I see online.
Thanks to anyone who may be able to help.

Thanks Dan. I'm really happy that I was able to get one since some people say the seeds have a mind of their own. They're such adorable plants. Here's to hoping that some more will pop up.

Re: Baggie Method Bad for Any Species?
Good luck with your seeds Karin, I bet your cacti do well in that Texas heat. Better than in Chicago anyway. We've got quite a short summer here for cacti. Freezes too late into the season and too early too.
