Re: Cacti conservation

Hi MD. I just looked on Ralph Martin's numbers database and the ones from Poconchile are the original population Ritter found. http://www.fieldnos.bcss.org.uk/finder.php?Plant=Islaya+krainziana Evidently Karel Knize (KK) decided to call the Peruvian population Islaya krainziana v. longispina. Yes w...

Re: Cacti conservation

Now I've got a little more time, I'll mention a few taxa thought to be extinct or in a lot of trouble. Discocactus silvaticus is not recognized by everyone, but the locality is now a village. It is possible that there are a few plants remaining in Eastern Europe, but I have yet to track these down. ...

Re: Cacti conservation

Islaya krainziana is doing quite well in captivity since both Ritter and Knize originally sold the seeds and now many seed dealers offer seed from cultivated plants. In some cases ex situ conservation works better than in situ conservation, or even conservation by botanical gardens who can't grow e...

Did you try brecht?
I've only ordered Maihueniopsis from Bercht. Tephrocactus from ADBLPS.

Re: Cacti conservation

If you want a list of CR/EN species then check the links in my signature. I also have a list of (possibly) extinct species on my CR list.

Re: Sowing Tephorcactus and others: advices needed

It's really unknown what type of treatment works for these guys. There's good studies for Opuntia, but even there it seems species-dependent. I've had nearly 100% germination on a dozen T. geometricus field numbers without any stratification, and nothing when scarifying for others.

Re: Help with Discocactus

Depends on your ambient conditions. Wait for a couple weeks. D. buenekeri is definitely one of the easiest in the genus, though I've yet to have problems with Discocactus in general (same as JP's climate). JP has reported that some species (D. placentiformis I think?) actually tolerate slight freezi...

Aiko wrote: Tue Jan 16, 2018 10:59 am No. But Succulenta always send the seeds out during January (at least to members, they probably follow in February and March depending). So no reason to panic, yet.
Perfect. I'm a member again and ordered right away so hopefully I get some of those nice Brazilian species! Thanks Aiko.

Hi Wayne,

Good looking seedlings! This is a species of Echinopsis or Lobivia.

They've had a good year now to get their ducks in a row. Hearing about your experience makes me worry about my own order!

Re: Updated seed lists

Mesa Garden has been updated. See: http://mesagarden.com/ The Conophytums are getting expensive. But I would take advantage of the Asian craze myself too if I were them, I think... A risky business nonetheless, as you might scare away customers that like these plants even outside the hype. I person...

To those of you who knew him-a large contributor to the cactus files here, just wanted to let you know Jürgen Menzel lost his (short) battle with Leukemia. Please tell those you know who knew him. Thanks. Very sad I never got to meet him in person. A wonderful, generous, extremely knowledgeable cac...

Re: Another UNknown opuntia

If i was asking amateurs, i wouldnt be here. Im annoyed by the fact that everytime you try and ID something, that sounds like youre 100% certain, without a hint of doubt. Its like youre saying is only that one choice is available , no substitutes or mistakes are possible. I like your tenacity , but ...

Re: Another UNknown opuntia

While opuntia engelmanii is popular in wholesale, the same rule cannot be applied everywhere, not its possible that " a really tall opuntia white white spines" and " a very rotund-cladode opuntia with lots orange spines" could all be variants of engelmanii. I understand there ar...
