Update, so by 6 months of age all 8 of my surviving "tricostatum" seedlings had 4 ribs. At the age of 11 months, i.e. now, one seedling finally turned into a true tricostatum and one developed a fifth rib. So indeed, empiricially, at least for the first year, the number of ribs can change....
