Re: hen-and-chicks and shallow pots?

They're inside. I live in Ohio and it gets down to the low 30s some nights. Plus I don't trust the TONS of kids around here not to knock the plants off the porch.

hen-and-chicks and shallow pots?

Do hen-and-chicks need especially shallow pots? I've lost all of mine, except one. And I think I'm losing that one too. ](*,) I think root rot might be the problem, even though I tried to put them in shallow pots. The roots were still there, but they had become spindly and sparse. The leaves had all...

Re: First cactus!

I have them right up against a window and I keep the temperature around 70 here in the house. The only option I have for pushing them into true dormancy is putting them in the basement and I'm hesitant to do that because it's difficult for me to go up and down stairs because of my disabilities and I...

Re: First cactus!

It's got two pups beginning to sprout off. Should I still hold back water? I'm working on the sunny. XD Right now, I have a full spectrum light bulb on my plants right now. I need to go to one of the garden places in town and get their advice on what type of bulb to use to help my plants make it thr...

Re: New baby. :)

Huh. Would've never guessed aloe.

How can you tell if it needs more light? It's all green and pretty compact, so I'm not seeing anything wrong. If it's based on the first picture, please keep in mind the pic's overexposed. So that's not a good representation of the color.

First cactus!

So I broke down and got my first cactus! :D The conservatory tag just says "barrel cactus", so I was hoping to get some help with figuring out what it is. It's VERY soft, with NO sharp spines in it. On the lower right, it looks like it's got a couple pups starting. :) IMG_0001.JPG IMG_0002...

Re: Help with 3 plants

Hm. I'll probably have to hold off on that. Winter's hitting here and I'm having trouble getting my plants enough light as it is. XD

Re: Help with 3 plants

Oh, good to know my hunch about #1 was good. Hm, maybe. It kind of looks like both of those. Maybe it's a hybrid? That's a possibility, though the leaves are plain green and it looks like graptosedum leaves are all sorts of shades. thanks for the help! ETA: I hit up haworthia.org and found this: htt...

Plant 1, side view. There's a bit of stem or root that I could not, for the life of me, get under the soil without putting a good part of the plant and pups under the soil.

Mystery plant from the cactus club. Cannot, for the life of me, remember what it is. Outside of very hard and spiky.

Random seedlings I found at the nursery this summer. I'm not expecting anyone to be able to pin down the species at this stage, but I think they're sedum? I'm worried a bit about the brown, but it doesn't seem to be rot. The brown bits are very hard, like wood almost.

Re: Winter dormancy and other questions

Is pushing your plants into a dormant period REQUIRED? Mine are in the one good sunny window, and we keep the apartment at 70F (~21C) year round. I'm not sure how cold the basement gets, though I'm sure it stays well above freezing. I'm just wondering if I need to haul them all downstairs or if it'l...
