Re: Thank You, Greenhouse!

I have a 50% shade cloth that I install under the top shelf so the bottom shelf is kind of protected from some of the sun. Last year seedlings did fine with that setup. The side panels can't be removed for ventilation, so I use 2 Honeywell TurboForce HT900 fans to move the air. This year I will add ...

Re: Thank You, Greenhouse!

Thanks! If it's not too long a drive for you, please feel free to let me know if you'd like to come down to see my humble setup once the growing season really gets underway. It might be fun to exchange notes. I can let you know where we are by private message. Thanks for the invitation, it might no...

Re: Thank You, Greenhouse!

Thank you, I just looked at your post. I like the idea of having a custom made greenhouse. GHs like my Harbor Freight are not insulated enough. Also I like yours having 2 roof vents and a fan at the peak of the roof. I only have a door and 1 roof vent and find it really hard to keep the inside tempe...

Re: Thank You, Greenhouse!

Interesting, I live a little bit more to the north than you and will not start using my greenhouse until probably 3 weeks. I cannot imagine heating my basic Harbor Freight greenhouse during winter so I bring them inside, I have a cold room in the basement with temperatures ranging 40-50F (4-10C). I ...

Re: What are you all reading?

Right now I am reading Empire of the Summer Moon: Quanah Parker and the Rise and Fall of the Comanches, the Most Powerful Indian Tribe in American History . I did not visit the Texas Panhandle yet, but reading this book I can feel what it was like to be on the Llano estacado at that time. Prior to t...

Tucson area Yucca/Agave ?

Hello, can somebody help me ID this rather small (about 10 inch tall) species found near Tucson last summer.

Thank you !

Re: Every day new flowers in the greenhouse in Köln

When you were a kid you wanted to have greenhouses for plants just like your hero, Nero Wolfe. Now, kids like me (I still consider myself a kid even at 30 years old haha) read your posts and look at your pictures and wish that one day we will have a collection just like our cacti hero, K.W. ! Take c...

Re: Every day new flowers in the greenhouse in Köln

Always fun to look at your pictures, especially during this time of year. Weather speaking, the last 6 weeks were really bad on this side of the world, way colder than usual weather and no sun. Already more than 1ft of snow on the ground ... it sucks. It looks like you had a really nice fall in Colo...

Re: Over-wintering fluorescent setup and questions/help

Glad to hear the fans are working for you. Your windowsill setup should work fine. Wait as long as you can before putting them back under the lights/warmer temps. Early march sounds good. I never had to acclimatize my cactus to fluo lights after being in the dark for weeks, your setup produces more ...

Re: Over-wintering fluorescent setup and questions/help

Yes everybody I know think it is weird to collect and grow cacti here. You have to think and improvise a little bit, not always as simple as if we were living in a sunny and dry USDA zone 9 area ... Let us know what you think about the fan. Also I forgot to answer your Q1 in my previous post. What y...

Re: Over-wintering fluorescent setup and questions/help

Hello samreu, 2 years ago I was living in a small basement apartment and had no choice but to put all the cacti on a windowsill come winter. I had a double T5 fixture 6 inches above them and a baseboard heater, that I could not turn off, just below the window so it was always 22-23 C during the day ...
