I would think that winter watering is fine if you can provide adequate heat and light. One of the reasons why people don't suggest watering in winter is because of etiolation. Without enough light, but with enough water, the plants can very easily etiolate.

I did exactly what you did for the standard method. On your rare seed method, have you ever checked how thick your envelope was? It's always gone through... Haworthia White ghost was in flower. I'll go and dissect a flower so I can see a close up of the organs. Always helpful as a reference when I have the opportunity to hybridize.
