Re: Every day new flowers in the greenhouse in Köln

I don’t know either, just read somewere that the origin of this cactus was a bit uncertain :) Well, then neither of us know. . . Best wishes K.W. I am almost certain this plants is chimeric in nature. I believe the stripes/ridges are made of genetically (and morphologically) distinct tissue ...

Re: Would you consider these to be succulents?

It's tricky. There isn't an agreed upon definition for what a succulent is. Any plant with fleshy parts above ground could be considered a succulent. Sansevieria would be, but I don't think other Dracaenas would be. Some other succulent houseplants not commonly thought of as succulents could include...

Re: The Magic Greenhouse

This greenhouse isn't big, but it is magic! Only good and happy experiences take place here. It is a trove of rare and unusual cacti & succulents. With the exception of a few things that have been propagated by small cuttings, everything else is seed grown. So let's start off by showing the new...

Re: Growing cacti- a mans world?

It seems to be, but I think that's changing. In my club, most of the membership is men, but about half of the officers are women. I don't think there is any reason women won't eventually make up half of the hobby. I think the current situation is a reflection of women having less time and money than...

Re: What now?

Update: I degrafted the opuntioides today. I brushed against it and the whole thing fell off. I am currently rooting it I don't have pictures right now due to technical issues. It did grow quite a bit bigger, but the original problem of small cladodes/too much branching never went away. I think it w...

Re: Schlumbergera/Hatiora lutea/- Schlumbergera epiphylloides. Experiences?

Grafting isn’t an option for me I'd suggest taking another look at grafting. Shlumbergera are fairly easy to graft and I think it could be a good option. You could use something like S. truncata as a stock. If you have an own roots plant, why not graft a cladode as a backup in case the own roots pl...

That's very strange! It almost looks like it was a crested bud that split in two. I saw a bromeliad where I work with an extra flower the other day too. Something's in the air!

Re: My GreenHouse Build.

Hi Shane. I was at Dollar General a few months back and bought 3 dozen 3" and 6" plastic pots. Cleaned out the store. I repotted some plants that were in small 1 1/2" and 2" square and round plastic nursery pots into these. I wanted to see how they worked. I had drilled a single...

Re: Pereskiopsis Growing Guide

Just for fun, here's my largest Pereskiopsis. I let it grow and never cut it. It's the most habitat like Pereskiopsis I know of in cultivation. Habitat pictures of Pereskiopsis are scarce so I don't really know how close it is, but I do let it go dormant half the year like in the wild. I'm curious t...

I have had great success using biological control for fungus gnats. I'm definitely going to give the fungus a try. Thanks for sharing. I had no idea it existed

Re: Looking for a topical insecticide for mealybugs

Have you ever heard about enthomopathogenic fungi as a biocontrol? I have not. This is intriguing and I think preferable to whack-a-mole pesticide application. Realistically, in my Crassulaceae there will always be mealies somewhere. They're just such a target. It would be nice to turn it from an a...

Some questions about heat

I recently moved and am adjusting to my new space. The new space gets many more hours of sun than the old one did, and also gets hotter (the climate is the same, it's just more sun = more heat). Some of my cacti don't seem to be liking it and I'm trying to figure out what to do. Here's an example of...

Re: Hana's cacti

I have never seen a Mammilaria pectinifera IRL but every time I see a pic of the species, the spines gets me thinking of marine naked snails :) I don’t know what marine naked snails are called in English though ? ( the common name, for all genera) I'm not sure what the english name for "marine...

Re: Looking for a topical insecticide for mealybugs

I have an update here, I tried an Imidacloprid spray and it really helped. The problem has been greatly reduced in size and I believe can soon be eliminated (for now...). The mealies did come back in some (maybe 10-20%) of the plants. This I believe is due to: 1. The spray not quite reaching every p...
