Re: Mealies and flat mites and scale -- oh, my!
Hi Steve yet once again, you are providing a spectacularly useful diatribe ... one that I am quite grateful for. Thank you. My product of choice is Bayer Advanced 3-in-1 containing 0.47% Imidacloprid. yah ... i concur ... i've used this for both inside and outside plants, and it is an unbelievably e...

what is this purple coloring?
the aerole (and some surrounding areas) of one of my cacti ( Ferocactus flavovirens ) has turned purple this last winter to this spring. anybody got an idea? Ignore the cut spines. I needed to get to some black stuff at their base and it was easier to cut them close so i could brush/wash that black ...

Re: You don't need a better camera!
... but if all I'm doing is taking macro photos of my cacti and plant experiments for my own personal record do I really need it? I bought a digital Fujifilm S4500 for $120, with a fixed lens (you couldn't put different lenses on it) that took the most incredible macro pictures ... a real cheap cam...

Re: Questions for mineral soil mediums
I caught the High Percentage Inorganic Mix bug last year (due to Steve Johnsons posts, God bless him ... this man is a genius in case you haven't noticed), and transplanted somewhere in the vicinity of 95 plants. It was derned expensive. At least for me it was, living on Social Security. And I think...

Re: Pachypodium
i KNOW that this posting is 14 years old at this point, but I found it doing a google search for "minimum temperature for pachypodium lamerei", among others. and if I found it, someone else will, so I thought I'd put in a quick note. Almost ALL of the search results that I saw said that 50...

Do you also speak french, Wayne? :) My apologies for not getting back to you earlier ... I've had some problems with the Forum that appear to be resolved. Mais je m'égare. Vous avez demandé si nous parlons français ... la réponse est: "Bien sûr, nous parlons français" Y también hablamos e...

Re: Pilosocereus pachycladus ???
Pilosocereus nomenclature is very muddy terrain, i learned that the hard way. While the juveniles all look the same, I have way too many possibilities for X. It may or may not be pachycladus. As for Y and Z, i believe there is a good chance they are leucocephalus +Sometimes this "Taxonomy"...

Re: A "how-to" guide on acidification
s What about the cacti which grow naturaly in calcareous soil (calcium bicarbonate soil)? Like arios and friends... While these kinds of cacti WILL grow in this environment, they will not necessarily thrive in it. And if you grow them in a soil devoid of such ... contaminants , they will grow h...

Re: Say my name, say my name - Survivor List A
1 could be some sort of Tricocereus 2 This should be Austrocylindropuntia vestita because of those tiny wool like structures. I am not really sure. 3 Eriosyce species 4 not a cactus that is a Euphorbia. 5 Eriosyce, maybe Eriosyce algarrobensis. 6 Mammillaria , could be something like Mammillaria pr...

Re: Pilosocereus pachycladus ???
On further inspection, X is quite possibly magnificus Hi Elie As usual, I am just delighted to hear from you. With those upside-down chevron marks on the body, that are due to seasonal growth, you may very well be onto something there. My cactus has those marks too! But the P. magnificus , from the...

A pretty Agave needs a species name
This Agave was given to me just recently in a plant swap. And while the guy I got it from was pretty sure it is an Agave, he had NO idea what the species might be. So, confident as I am of all the members here, I come to ya'll for an ID. I know these pics aren''t great, but I dropped my good camera ...

Re: A "how-to" guide on acidification
i don't think i said it here, but i'll repeat it here. i think part of it depends on your own personal tendencies ... the way you run your life. I do the best job I can in almost everything I do ... so in those kinds of cases, a meter IS most appropriate ... but there ARE cases where the "rule...

Re: What temperature is a "Winter Rest"?
this is a nice fun fact. I didnt know it. My sister, who has a horse and is probably one of the biggest fans of horsedom that I have ever run across, swears that it is so. I was gape-mouthed, gob-smacked shocked and astounded when she told me that. I didn't know what to say. All I could do was shak...
