Can this bamboo be saved?

Hey folks, long time no see. Some friends were moving and they gave me their houseplants that they couldn't take with them. I don't know the first thing about bamboo but I took them anyway. Everything was going fine until about two months ago when it started to look kind of dying. I put it next to a...

Re: Grow light for an Opuntia microdasys

Thanks for the advice! That's a lot cheaper and a lot easier than buying another grow light!

The lights are blue and white. No idea why. They were that way out of the box.

Grow light for an Opuntia microdasys

I have this terribly stretched O. microdasys that I've posted about a couple of times before. My apartment, unfortunately, get's just very little natural light, and I live in a foggy area so what natural light it does get isn't very bright. I got a grow light for it, but it's this LED type thing tha...

What is this?

They have this plant growing at the gym I go to. At first glance I thought it was an African violet, and it clearly isn't. I think it might be a species of Crassula. What do you think?

Re: Opuntia microdasys?

I've been keeping it under a grow light because I don't have a windowsill that faces south that's large enough. I'm a little worried about it still. As you can see, it's grown a lot longer and thinner but the pads toward the bottom seem to be dying. I don't think it's simple corking. Sorry if you ca...

Re: treating storebought media

So should I just put the dirt in a pot with some water and boil it?

treating storebought media

I need to repot some succulents and plant some seeds. The dirt where I live is like clay, so I ordered some media that I think might be good. I've heard a rumor that before you use store-bought media you should cook it or something to kill any germs or pests that might be in it. Does anyone know abo...

What is this Opuntia?

I see it for sale all over China but I don't think I ever saw it in the United States.

Re: Wal*Mart and the case of the false flowers

I've figured out that there are some good deals to be had on these at Lowes on their discount plant racks. Once the straw flower falls off, or gets wet and loses it's color, Lowes will mark it down to $1 to get rid of it. I've picked up a few really nice cactus this way. Good job! I always love a w...

Re: Cacti and succulents in China

As you can see, the health of the plants is pretty sad most of the time. I think, unfortunately, the people around here are pretty neglectful of their plants.

Re: Cacti and succulents in China

Thanks for the assistance. Here are some of my pictures. I think instead of blasting y'all with pictures in the future I'll just start an instagram account. I'm still working out the details on that. Internet stuff in China is a little bit tricky.

Opuntia microdasys?

So I got this for a friend. I feel like it can only be an O. microdasys, but the little lime green growths are something I've never seen before on an O. microdasys. It was under a table at the plant shop where I bought it, so I'm guessing it hasn't been getting enough light, but would that make the ...

Re: Cacti and succulents in China

I think you're thinking of Japan. The popular Astrophytum myriostigma cultivar, Onzuka, is Japanese.

As for hosting the photos here, it's kind of a lot of pictures to try to resize so I think I'll just pay for photobucket.

Cacti and succulents in China

I moved to inland China about three weeks ago. I didn't expect to see many foreign succulents, let alone cacti, but to my happy surprise they are about as common as they are in the United States. The variety aren't very exotic, and many of them aren't very well taken care of, but it's still nice to ...
