Re: Do these plants need watering?

Originally Donald & Rowley in 1966 did a Reunion of Neoporteria where they lumped everything that Kattermann later lumped into Eriosyce into Neoporteria, but kept Eriosyce sensu stricto out. The reason John Donald told me was they thought it should be in but would require too many name changes s...

Agree with Ian, the red flowered plants from around the Esmeralda region are taltalensis sensu Hutchison.

Match that Red Arrows!

The guy flying the 3 kites is in his 80s, and he's from Canada. He comes to the Washington State International Kite Festival every year. His skin is like leather as he normally flies with his shirt off. He is deaf, so when he flies we hold our hands up and wave them for applause. He flies 2 with his...

Re: Problems potting...one problem after another

You seem to use smaller pots over there than many of us do here. Many of us tend to pot so the spines are all contained within the diameter of the pot so when placed tightly together on the greenhouse staging neighbouring plants do not get impaled if pots get pushed together, or even in transit. How...

Re: Wha t is a Variegated Christmas Cactus?

The red colour is just "sun colour" from brighter light as Daiv says. Many of our terrestrial cacti will develop that in the growing season. Variegated plants are usually streaked with yellow or white and very occasionally red. Searching the Web there are few Christmas cacti I would regard...

Re: Just discovered something which you may know anyway!

Should have added you can also use these in front of lights to produce a larger diffused light source rather like a softbox, or even put off camera flash behind for the same result for many photographic uses:- http://www.lastoliteschoolofphotography.com/using-circular-diffuser-panels-and-the-panelit...

Re: Wha t is a Variegated Christmas Cactus?

I have been given a couple of stem segments of russeliana said to be from the Heidelberg clone, so presumably originally from Heidelberg Botanical Gardens. It looks exactly like the Christmas Cactus (buckleyi) but in miniature, the stem segments being smaller. It is obvious which parent the non toot...

Re: Just discovered something which you may know anyway!

Perhaps I should clarify what is meant by diffuser in this case. There are several types of diffusers used in photography, from diffusion filters that go on the lens used in portraiture to give a soft effect and hide the sitters wrinkles! Also diffusers placed directly over lights and studio or came...

Re: Wha t is a Variegated Christmas Cactus?

I always understood that cristate, monstrose and variegated plants can also come about not just from seedlings but as a mutation of an individual stem Daiv. Also in that case if normal stems later appear they should be cut off as the plant may then revert to it's more vigorous normal form. "Var...

Re: Rhipsalis salicornioides flowers

Some Rhipsalis and their allies do produce long leaders and then short growths from them. I think your plant does need to be in better light since the individual joints are very etiolated. They are usually better in hanging pots or baskets where they can hang downwards, as that is their natural grow...
