Nice shot. Too bad your prickly pears didn't make it into the contest.

Wow! El Jefe Night Blooming Cereus

Check out this wild Tucson Peniocereus greggii (Arizona Queen-of-the-Night) wrapped up in the dead branches of an ironwood tree. All of the cactus arms originate from a single woody stem situated at the bottom left-hand side of the photo. :offtheair: ...and a more close up shot, which doesn't even c...

I have never seen one with a flower on it. Occasionally, I will see some with the big red fruits. More often, I stumble across them by chance. The good news is that they tend to cluster together. I found five of them within a 20-meter-diamter area on Ft. Huachuca, in southeastern Arizona (Where's Wa...

No. It is not my backyard. I wish! and I meant to say that saguaros and ocotillos are two of my favorite types of succulents. I took these photos while doing an archaeological survey up the slope of Tumamoc Hill, just west of downtown Tucson. The hill is a natural preserve, but it also happens to ha...

For the time being, I put it in a 5-gallon bucket with soil from the site. Does it need to be watered or should I wait until late winter? Is transplanting a cactus in the winter a bad idea? I didn't really have much of a choice.

Night-blooming Cereus

I have been working on a construction site where a backhoe pulled up a night-blooming cereus (Peniocereus greggii). Apparently, the stems broke off and were lost, and now, all that is left is the large tuber. Is there a chance that a new stem will grow up from the tuber? If so, what is the best way ...

I am no expert, but it looks like they need to have a more well-drained soil. Maybe a half gravelly sand, half topsoil mixture? Your planter needs a hole (or holes) in the bottom and some larger gravels along the base to sieve the water. Anyway, that seems to be the magic combination for my opuntias.
