Re: SDK1's Seedlings 2023
This made me think in planning a controled experiment... I have some seeds in quantity for that.

Re: SDK1's Seedlings 2023
Note about the previous post: I said pure hydrogen peroxyde but it is not 100%, it is something like 3% I think. But for sterelization a dilution of that is recommended. I tried it pure (direct from the bottle ) and it was not effective.

Re: SDK1's Seedlings 2023
Hi SDK1, Good information here in this thread. I liked the sowing mix and the idea of do not sterilize and see what happens. Here is my experience on that: for long time I skiped the sterelization and it was ok...when fungus arrive I just open the bags and let the seedlings grow in open air, and the...

Re: How heritable are the traits in Astrophytum?
Ok Frank! So I have my answer: it is indeed complicated Just an example: I have two miryostigma with four ribs. Crossing them I would expect a high number of individuals with four ribs in the offspring. At least more four ribed than if one of the parents were five-ribed. Well...lets see what happens...

Re: How heritable are the traits in Astrophytum?
Hi Frank Yes...it is right I know I mixed the things because star shape is for asterias and onzuka is for miryostigma. I am not being specific: I want to know in general if the traits are passed to the offspring in a "logical" or "visible" way. Traits such as number of ribs, flec...

Re: Which genera will germinate better if seeds are stored for a year?
Hi mmcavall, I have close up pictures of Horizonthalonius seeds in the long Escobaria minina post . the seeds have a hard outer shell so 4 or 5 swipes with fine grain sand paper and the dark color goes away I stop there. hardest part is holding on to the seeds they can slip away so recommend doing ...

How heritable are the traits in Astrophytum?
Seeds from a cross between, lets say, two "star shape", or two "onzuka" will result in 100% of star shape (or onzuka) types? Or it is more complicated than that? Or: Using an onzuka as the mother plant, being the father plant an ordinary miryostigma, what will be the percentage o...

Re: Which genera will germinate better if seeds are stored for a year?
Thanks for all replies. My question is: should I keep the seeds in the fridge for a year or so, instead of sowing them immediately after harvest? I guess it depends on the genus/species. So what are the genera that will give better results with old seeds? I agree that Mammillaria is a candidate to b...

Re: Is Turbinicarpus alonsoi self fertile?
I bought this Turbinicarpus alonsoi hybrid many years ago It has white striped flowers I've tried to figure out it's hybrid mate I first thought T. lophophoroides, because of the fine spines and wool then maybe T. jauernigii, because of the color and whatever Could be crossed with Strombocactus, ne...

Re: Is Turbinicarpus alonsoi self fertile?
G'morning mmcavall, This is my T. alonsoi with flower. Is it an alonsoi, isn't it? Yes Your cactus is a T. alonsoi. My cactus is also a T. alonsoi. I checked T. alonsoi on web-sites. Some of plants had similar spines with your alonsoi and some others had similar spines with my alonsoi. Frank Thank ...

Which genera will germinate better if seeds are stored for a year?
Thats it. Which are the genera that will have higher germination rates when seeds are one year old, in comparison to fresh seeds? I'm systematically harvesting seeds and sowing within a month or so, but sometimes I wonder if I should store the seeds for lets say a year before sowing. Are there some ...
