Re: Strange growth pattern - help requested
Thank you, Steve and Fred! I appreciate your recommendations. I had heard positive things about Mars Hydro, so I will try one. One question: would it be best to give it a full, say, 12 hours of light, or try to match the timing to the current day length? Keep in mind that I don't necessarily want t...

Re: Plastic pots
If you are willing to pay for the shipping, I would suggest plastic pots made here in Australia. I've only noticed sun-damage in very old pots or pots made of non-black plastics. Even the little 65mm square pots cacti normally come in last forever. I've got some that have been out in the summer sun ...

Re: water temperature
I would generally take the position of if your water is too cold coming out of the tap, then it's too cold to water your plants. However, I can see how a greenhouse might complicate things. I think I would only be concerned with cacti that are very cold intolerant, such as Melocacti. Cold weather ki...

Cactus "coffee table" book?
I wonder if someone can recommend one. By "coffee table book", I mean a colour, beautifully photographed, large format book, with every or alternating pages being a photograph. I'm not sure what other people call them, but I've always known them as coffee table books. They are usually cons...

Re: Dry rot or bacterial spot?
Any idea what concentration I should use for a soil soak and for how long? I've never had to do fungicide soil soaks, but this may give us a clue -- the label from Bayer (now BioAdvanced) 3-in-1: Bayer_3-in-1_active_ingredients.pdf.jpg When I was still using the 3-in-1, my dilution rate was 1 cup p...

Re: Dry rot or bacterial spot?
Download, I'm so sorry that I did remember this a lot sooner: https://www.cactiguide.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=376789#p376789 If you're able to get a demethylation inhibitor like tebuconazole or another Triazole, you can apply it as a soil soak. Topical sprays don't do much once a fungal infection ...

It could also be that there is moisture on the cactus. If dehydrated but there is moisture on its skin, it may try to grow roots in those locations.

Re: Two new cacti (Feros???) -- and an attack on my computer
(...) F glaucescens is very distinct, even at a young age. They normally have yellow spines with no red in them. I have not yet found a picture of a real young one where the name is sure. Here in the lexicon https://www.cactiguide.com/cactus/?genus=Ferocactus&species=glaucescens the first pictu...

Dry rot or bacterial spot?
I've previously asked for help ID'ing this cactus (https://cactiguide.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=46903). I suspect Pilosocereus or Espostoa. Regardless, it has a big problem: https://i.imgur.com/gqIpTP8.jpg https://i.imgur.com/xD0dp8s.jpg It started off about two winters back as a little brown on som...

17 ribs is not unusual for E huascha. It is likely a hybrid however. Echinopsis species are some of the most hybridised cacti in cultivation.

How's this ? It is still a tiny picture. Please don't scale it down. Download, I have uploaded photos that were about 490kb to meet the uploading limit of the forum and then noticed the forum reduces them in size even further without my action to less than 100kb. Madkactus is probably not do...

[translation: the red thorns are painted]
Based on what? Red spination on Ferocactus is perfectly normal.
