Re: What might this be?

Is your plant from Altman Plants? I bought one labeled as M. albilanata from them last year (or maybe the year before) with 3 growth points and I have the suspicion they are mislabeled. They look more like M. geminispina subsp. leucocentra, the form that still goes by the older name M. albata, but ...

Re: Summer dormancy and rain

Thank you for your answers, they put my mind at ease. I also checked out the NWS website and found it very informative and more detailed than the apps I usually rely on. And yes, I bookmarked it. My cacti will keep their umbrellas closed, so to speak, and hopefully get a little shower at least to wa...

Summer dormancy and rain

We’ve been experiencing a bit of a heat spell recently here in Southern California with night temps consistently over 75°F. I’ve been advised that my cacti are probably in summer dormancy because of this, and to stop watering them. It is currently 101°F outside and I am protecting my plants from the...

Re: Please help with ID

Xique-xique is the popular name of Pilosocereus gounellei (yes, it is now a scientific name too, but before that it was/has been the name people from the region of occurence of this plant - northeast Brazil - call it). I can't imagine how to pronounce it in "latin" or English. In Portugue...

Who knows where Altman gets some of his names from?? But, in this case, I'd wager on someone not name-savvy just spelled it wrong on the assembly line, and the rest is history.
Darn autocorrect 😂

Re: Please help with ID

Minime8484 wrote: Mon Sep 05, 2022 4:17 pm Pilosocereus baumii is an Altman's bastardization of Pilosocereus braunii, which is a synonym of Xiquexique (Pilosocereus) gounellei ssp zehntneri.
Ah, interesting. Is that as fishy as it sounds or is it something that growers do all the time?

Thank you so much. I looked them up just now and I think you may be right on all of them.

Please help with ID

Could you help me ID these 4 cacti? The last (blue) one was labeled Pilosocereus baumii, but I haven’t been able to find any information for a cactus by that name http://uliseng.zenfolio.com/img/s/v-10/p284817899-5.jpg http://uliseng.zenfolio.com/img/s/v-10/p508506650-5.jpg http://uliseng.zenfolio.c...

Re: AM/PM watering

So if it doesn’t cool down below 75°at night we can expect them to enter summer dormancy. How fast does this happen (after just one night?), and how quickly do they snap out of it? And what happens when they are summer dormant and we suddenly get rain, like we did yesterday? I wasn’t home when it h...

Re: AM/PM watering

So I guess I should continue to protect them from the intense sun and withhold water for now? I'd say yes, better safe than sorry. You and I don't have to contend with summer dormancy issues all that much because it's infrequent and doesn't last long. Contrast this with growers living in the desert...

Re: AM/PM watering

Where i live now I always water cactus in the am because I don't want the spines to stay wet overnight and get black mold growing on them. In the Desert when I lived there it didn't matter it was much drier so watering at night after work was the way to go. Interesting, and a very good point since ...

Re: AM/PM watering

So much good information, thank you all. It is funny how for 40 years I had cacti as house decor, and they did just fine (never bloomed though). Now that I decided to take some of them outside and I want to know more about how to care for them properly I feel completely clueless. Interesting contrad...

AM/PM watering

Does it matter whether I water my cacti in the morning or evening? I have this vague feeling that I read something about it once.

Re: What might this be?

Some Mammillaria have milky sap that oozes out after mechanical damage and dries up looking like the drops on your plant. These dried up sap droplets are often seen in Mammillaria that have milky sap. They can be caused by herbivores or piercing from spines of adjacent plants. They usually disappea...
