This is growing wild in sandy soil and is very plentiful in a 50 by 100 yd area. It is only 3 to 5 inches in length and 1 to 2 inches tall. The picture is taken from above using a macro lense. Can anyone please ID.

Fantastic ID guys. I double checked searching the name you gave (Opuntia Pusilla) and your 100% on.
Thanks again

Wow, you really surprised me there! I read "Huntington Beach" and immediately thought California, but I see it is South Carolina.
Did you get any pictures of them at the beach? I'd love to see the habitat shots!

Ha! I thought the exact same thing!
There are a few Opuntias and i think C. imbricata in Orange County.
Very cool find, 1deybreak!

Don't forget C. prolifera - you got that one Darryl?
Have you ever put together a list of your Opuntias?

Doh! I meant C. prolifera, not imbricata
C. parryi too! (C. californica)
Had my database going when i first started, but haven't kept it up in quite some time now. Probably have atleast a few dozen

I will be going back to the spot this is growing later this week and will take more pictures. I'll post them here probably over the weekend. In the meantime please check out my video on utube (search Hunting Beach State Park South Carolina). I have included this site in the credits.
