F1 hybrids

Post by Hanazono »

I grafted 3 caput-medusae based F1 seedlings in Feb this year. Unlikely farther plant, all of them are growing very slowly.
I crossed with many other Astrophytum but I could not get fruits from many plants.
The germination ratio was also very bad.
All attached photos were taken today.

Pardon my ignorance, but what is "F1"? A "field" designation of some kind? My initial reaction was that it couldn't possibly be a 200mph race car!

Interesting grafts, I have never had great luck with seedlings grafted to large stocks. :D

F1 means first filial. When you cross different cactus, the appearance will be similar to the mother plant at the stage of F1.

The stock is Harraisia jusbertii which is used commonly as seedling grafting stock in Japan.
Jusbertii is a permanent stock will grow continuously even winter.
I propagate all root stock from seeds.

I normally graft seedlings around 20 days after germination in spring.
Small type of Ariocarpus will be flower in autumn same year and Astrophytum will be flower next spring.
The father plant, caput-medusae used for making these hybrids was in flower less than 5 months after sowing seeds.

Very neat, most pictures of the stock plant I have seen have thin ribs. Would you mind sending me a how-to as to humidity and what steps you follow, I think I may be able to replicate it with Cereus as a stock since I have so many readily available.
