Critters of Alaska

Post by daiv »

Hey all, just a fun post here. Some critter pics from Alaska:

For you fishermen... I just picked him up for the pic and then put it back.

This Magpie was eating bugs on cars:

These guys are quite symbolic of Alaska:

Doll Sheep - these are a long long way off so the pic is as good as I could get:

A Sea Otter!

Puffins

This is all that the Humback would show us - none of the classic tail flips:

These were also a long way off - Mountain Goats:

And what is a trip to Alaska without Moose?

Overall, there was a lot less Wildlife than I expected. We did not see a single Bear and were dissapointed to not see any Musk Ox. It is true that there is a lot of wildlife there, but it is so far spread out that you just don't see much.

Glad you liked them. The Salmon was just one of many that were trying to swim up that pipe. Other streams had them too. But many were already starting to die. It is a bit weird to see them like that. Some of them were pretty scuzzy looking.

Darryl, those are Caribou. Here is a bull moose - he was a long way off too:

very cool Daiv!!! looks like a pretty amazing trip! reminds me a lot of home.

next time, if you want to see bear, drive mountain logging roads that are legged. lots of berries grow in clear cuts, and bears LOVE these areas!

thats an impressive moose! to be honest those things scare me more than bear.....they are 110% pure muscle, and often have the weight and attitude to put it to good use

got any more pics? looks like you had a good time :)

Wow, Daiv, great pics. You saw a lot more critters than we did. The only Dall’s sheep we saw were so far off they looked like mountainside dandruff. We did see a couple of hundred bald eagles and probably 1000 Dall’s porpoises, tho, which was really neat. The guide promised us a grizzly but we passed a sign that said “Bear Left”, so we turned around and went back to the ship…

Nice pictures, Daiv!
That one showing the puffins is almost comical. Looks like the one in the air is doing a dance pirouette.
I know, it was just landing in the water, correct?

Yep, it was hard to photograph on full zoom on a moving boat. that was the best one I could get.
