Greenhouse project in Miami
Greenhouse project in Miami
The Greenhouse Kit arrived right on Christmas Day.
Took us about 4 weeks to assemble, building the tables, laying down step stones, installing LED lighting and finishing up on the outside.
I am very impressed with the quality of the Greenhouse, only wished the instructions were a little more precise.
End of January all of my plants moved in and are quite happy so far. Two larger fans improve airflow and so far temps topped at "only" 100-105 F.
The following pictures show the progress and some flowers from early February :

Great greenhouse, and lovely plants!

I get scared just thinking about a greenhouse in Florida. Forget the plants, won't the greenhouse melt?

Very clean job and incredible plants!
Can you share some more details? Brand? Dimensions?

Greenhouse won't melt, but the humans working in it might... especially in Miami!iann wrote:I get scared just thinking about a greenhouse in Florida. Forget the plants, won't the greenhouse melt?

Super clean!
What did you do to anchor it down? I understand it can get really windy there sometimes.

Very neat. I especially like the GH flooring. I would also be interested to know brand & dimensions if you can post the info.
That picture of the mamm bloom is very nice.

Thanks to all for the nice comments.
The name of the Greenhouse is RIGA S by Hoklartherm. I bought the 9’8” wide x 14” long version direct from the manufactor in Germany.
Specs: 8 MM UV coated twin wall polyvcarbonate over main body and 10 MM twin wall polycarbonate in front & back walls for extra strength - also gives you a 35%-40% diffused light inside, so plants do not get burned.
Being german and getting goods from Germany every week by air, it was so much cheaper for me to purchase the greenhouse in Germany.
It is also sold in the USA wherever quality greenhouses are sold.
I also bought the aluminum foundation kit.
One of the reasons why I picked this onion shaped greenhouse, was the claim by the manufacture to withstand Hurricane force winds.....wind is forced up and kind of reflected.
I also decided to screw the greenhouse onto a concrete footer.
Like everyone living in Hurricane territory we always pray that the next one will miss us.
Yes, it gets hot in Miami, but with the sea breeze it hardly ever gets over 90 F (32 C). It is much hotter in Arizona, southern California or even central Florida...
Ok, wantering or any other job inside the greenhouse during the day is a tough job. But I love my plants....

Love the greenhouse and love the flowers as well!! Especially love that first pink Astro flower and the Neoporteria flowers!!!
Re: Greenhouse project in Miami
Thanks for the info and stats. Really a neat kit and so very attractive the way you arranged it and of course you have it filled with some downright awesome plants!

What a great layout! I really like the angle and the stones, very artistic!
A wonderful collection as well! I especially like the blue palm tree in the background. Is it a Bismarckia nobilis? Hard to tell from the distance...

I am always happy to see more Florida C&S enthusiasts here on the forum. Do you grow any plants in your yard/garden, or are you confining your collection to the greenhouse?

Re: Greenhouse project in Miami
Hi Harriet,
I keep all cacti in the greenhouse, with all the rain we have and had down here in Miami (so far for the year +25 inch) it would be not safe to keep the plants outside.
My tropical plants like Heliconias, Gingers, Bananas etc. love the rain, but my cacti would probably do not so well...

To John C:
the palm in the background is an Red Latan Palm (Latania lontaroides) not a Bismarckia.
I will post on the weekend a picture of my Bismarckia, quite stunning palm - has flowers this year for the first time

Re: Greenhouse project in Miami
We have been drowning in rain up here too, but so far my in-ground plants are doing OK!
