discoloration in seedling folds

Post by lamer12 »

Hello all,

I planted a packet of mixed seeds for the first time approximately 3 months ago. Thus far, I have lost a few seedlings to mold (light grey) but consider it to be an overall success that the germination rate was 75%. :D My current concern is that a dark discoloration has appeared in the creases, folds and underside of the areolas of most seedlings. However, it is absent from the crown. The color varies from dark green to dark purple. I believe this indicates stress in the most rapidely dividing areas. The lighting was recently raised from 15cm to 22cm to determine if this was a contributing factor. I am most concerned that this may indicate a microbial attack. Hopefully, it may just be temperature or watering. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. 8-[

Thanks.....

Setup: Temperature: 20-25C Day 18-22 Night
Watering: light top watering 1 per 3 Day
Light: 15Watt fluorescent

sounds allmost like the reddish lines that appear on about every ferocactus seedling.
But pics would help indeed.

Going with Pilif based on location of "discoloration".
Once bitten by the cactus collecting/growing bug, there is no known cure!
There's no 12 step programme for Cactaholics...so I shall just have to get some more!!

Hi,
Thank you for all the replies. They have been very useful for determining how to adjust my growing conditions. In general, I only make small changes to a variable to observe its effect. I have adjusted the light levels by 10-15cm and noticed that the dark discoloration is reduced while the plants color has improved. I have uploaded a couple of current pictures of the seedlings if anyone is interested. (something I should have done to start).

thanks, David

After seeing the pics, I second Pilif and wouldn't worry.
