Both Cereus Peruvianus Monstrosus?

Post by obligo »

i have one cutting of cereus that i took of o giant plant about 3 meters and so and a plant that is half a meter.
the cutting has sharp and hard thorns and not all over.
The plant has softer and tiny thorns all over its surface. Are the 2 plants the same and the differences are because one is young and the other is elder, or there are different specimen of monstrosus?
thanks in advance!

I agree with Peter. The first looks like a standard C. peruvianus f. monstose and the second is a "fairy castle"

hmm I am not sure what that is, but 'fairy castles' is a famous monstrose form of Cereus, I can't remember which, I wanna say C. hildimannianus or something like that, but I can't remember. ;)

No, the second one isn't a fairy castles, that ones has 4 ribs and different coloured aeroles and generally a different form. The second one is a montrose Cereus called 'Ming thing'.

I don't think the second is 'ming thing' (Cereus forbesii monstrose) or 'fairy castles'. The spines are very different. I have one very much like it with all those red spines (mine is just called monstrose Cereus for now)

well, i dont think is a fairy castle either, it doesent look like fairy castle according the pictures i googled. Here are some clearer shots. One thing too, is when i bought it from the nursery i had to choose the green one with the brownish spines and the ''blue'' one with the red spines. both spines are tiny and a BIG trouble when pin into the fingers! Anyway it looks like a miniature of the giant Cereus P. Monstrosus maybe when it get bigger will be the same, or its a different specimen.

Cereus tetragonus is not fairy caste. Anyone who grows tetragonus and fairy castle has seen the fairy castle revert back to hildmanianus. Having grown both for over 20 years it is obvious not to mention the names has been changed to Cereus hildmanianus in recent years. And it is not Cereus tetragonus to begin with it is Acanthocereus tetragonus.
