I have this Yucca gloriosa in open soil. 2 years ago after a snow storm it has been pressed on the ground and now a big part of its trunk is horizontal as you can see on the picture (the picture is top-view). The top is normal (vertical).
This spring I had to remove all the leaves on the horizontal trunk (in the area of the blue line that you can see in my picture) because they were full of cochineal. I had to cover the trunk with that green plastic net because my cats love to scratch the trunk
The plant is healthy though and every spring it blooms. Now, I'm thinking if it would be a good idea to cut the plant up to the red line that I've drawn on the pic. I would cut in spring 2014, now I think it's too hot.
What do you think about it? It's an extreme cut I know it..but being in direct contact with the ground could cause a rot on the trunk. Do you think it will restart growing? or it could die? If it won't die, it wouldn't bloom for a long period I suppose
Let me know your opinion please.
Thank you.

Re: prob with Yucca gloriosa
I know that our common local Yucca, (Yucca elata also called soaptree yucca as a common name) is perfectly happy growing on it's side. In fact in many landscapes that have them here they try and make sure they stay up, but along the freeway and stuff, I have seen them laying on their sides and being perfectly happy!
Here's to you, all you insidious creatures of green..er I mean cacti.
Re: prob with Yucca gloriosa
In effect my Yucca seems to be happy enough, it blooms and looks healthy.
So you think it's better to let it on its side.. Good to know!

I don't see a problem with it like that either. However, if you are worried you can put a flat stone or something similar between the trunk and the soil. That would keep the trunk off the soil without having to do anything serious to the plant.

yeah Saxicola makes a good point, I would just let it do it's thing. Like I said the Yucca elata here does this sometimes. Esp very old ones that are tall, but they have a tendency to do this

Re: prob with Yucca gloriosa
Finally I fixed the problem with my hard disk and I'm online again..
Thank you for the info and advice Saxicola and Peter, I'll let growing my Yucca as it wants

Re: prob with Yucca gloriosa
Hello,
good news from my Yucca gloriosa!
Now it has some offsets (by the way, are they offsets?).
Do you think can I leave them there? At the moment I haven't a pot or a place for them. I would prefer not to remove them, if it's possible..
Thank you
