Look at these little guys go!

Post by Baxter »

Hello folks, I decided to have a crack at growing some Hylocereus costaricensis but had not expected them to be this er.. vigorous. They are two weeks old and growing like mad :D I've got three little pots full so far.

How big should I let them get before I pot them on? I fear that I've underestimated the pot size needed for these seedlings!

I know what you mean, they do look different. I presume the funky little leaves are the cotyledons, I've seen other cacti start off like this & gradually change shape.

Either that or I've been duped >.<

My first impression is that these seedlings need more light and this is the reason for doing long "necks". I would top up the soil in those pots and seedlings could be doing fine there for several more months. Until started leaning one side and tipping pots down I think. Let's see first how the things will go.
And also H. undatus seedlings at this age look much more robust.

Thanks 7george, this is my first time with epiphytic cacti so I'm not sure what to expect. I'll watch this space. It's been really overcast recently, I wonder if I should try some suplimentary lighting?

They are not really looking good, but all may not be lost. First thing is to look out for something with spines emerging from between the pair of seed leaves, this way you will know its a cactus and not a tomato. Then, as suggested above, put more soil into the pots up to just below the seed leaves. It really looks like more light is needed.

They look exactly like my hylocereus undatus seedlings. I don't think they are tomatoes.
Buying a cactus a day will keep the madness away.

Could be Hylocereus, but they are etiolated. Get more light and they should be fine, although Hylocereus are always going to be somewhat "lax".

Thanks for the input guys, I've got them under some florescents and have filled the pots with more media, fingers crossed these guys will pick up. After doing some research the do look like Hylocereus seedlings. There are no spikes visible but I've had some mystery cactus mix seedlings that started off like these Hylocereus and later developed the cactus shape & spines.
Some pix of Hylocereus seedlings I found: http://www.vivapitaya.com/seed_files/seedlings.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7193/6822 ... f20e_z.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Although you can't believe everything you read on the web.

Thanks again for the advice, you guys are great! It's nice having somewhere where I can indulge my cactus fetish :D

Baxter's seedlings look like good Hylocereus seedlings although etiolated as mentioned above. It is interesting how much they look like Opuntia seedlings.
