I tried to ID this before in an email 5-21-14. At that time my late Mother had been growing this in clay type earth. I have repotted it twice since. I potted it in a recommended mix of vermiculite, peat (in lieu of coir) and earth. This year I have watered it in summer in my conservatory which can get up to about 130 degrees C. This year it has grown a carbuncle on the side furthest from the sun and is now 11 half inches high which is 3" in 4 years. It has flowered like mad and is still in flower now in October (see photo). It has 13 well defined ridges and each aureole has 8 to 11 red spines.
As I said my mother visited my late Aunt in Phoenix,Arizona and got the cactus bug. She may have brought seed home or baby plant.

Looks to me like a Ferocactus. Maybe F.pilosus? :-k. I'm sure someone will have a positive id for you.

Kind of looks like F.pilosus, but that species has distinctive cup-shaped flowers - could you get a close-up of the flowers?

This could be an Ferocactus hamatacanthus, even spines are little short. F. pilosus is quite different plant.
If your cacti mess in your job just forget about the job.

A short-spined form of Ferocactus hamatacanthus looks pretty likely. Definitely an oddball.
