It’s supposed to be very difficult in both germination and cultivation. If I get any seedlings I’ll probably graft them to keep them alive.

Any sprouts on your T. Graminispinus? I was checking mine and see 13 out of 22. Seems pretty quick.

8 of 23 so far. Those that did germinate came up very quickly.

Some seedlings sowed in August are three months old today. I opened the baggies briefly to clear out debris and update seedling counts in order to track their progress. While they were out of the baggies, I also photographed their progress.

Sowed 14th August 2018

Astrophytum Mix (these were included free with an order from StarAstrophytum.com)
Sowed: 48

Looks good, nice germination rates. I may have to give this cactus-hobby brno person a try. The aztekiums look pretty big for 3 months old, I have a few ritteri sprouts but none of the hintonii came up. You'll be grafting a few of them I would guess?

From what I see on the starastrophytum website, the are quite expensive
Did you get anything else from them? Would you recommend them?
Thanks! :D :D

In addition to checking in on three month old seedlings, I also sowed the last seeds for the season yesterday. Normally I wouldn't sow so late, but eBay sent me vouchers for $40 so I spent it all on seeds. Additionally, I checked germination rates for my October 30 sowing from Succseed.

November 14 seeds
Pachycereys Pringlei - 10 (Botanic Bounty)
Mammillaria Spinosissima cv. Super Red - 10 (Botanic Bounty)
Echinocereus rigidissimus v. Rubrispinus - 10 (Botanic Bounty)
Selenicereus Grandiflorus - 24 (Northern Rivers Seeds)
Lophophora Williamsii - 22 (Northern Rivers Seeds)
Echinocactus Horizonthalonius - 22 (Northern Rivers Seeds)

October 30 seeds (Succseed) - Sowed/Germinated/%
Rimacactus Laui - 23/10/43%
Turbinicarpus Graminospinus - 23/13/57%
Eriosyce Umadeave - 20/0/0%
Cipocereus Bradei - 27/2/7%

I'll graft some eventually, when they've put on some size. Not confident enough with my blade wielding skills to be cutting up the tiny things as yet.

Yes, they are expensive but I've also had excellent germination rates from them. They have a minimum purchase of 100 euro, which I spent on ordering 100 x Astrophytum asterias cv. superkabuto, 100 x Astrophytum Asterias cv. Ooibo Nudum, 100 x Astrophytum Myriostigma cv. Rokkotsu and 40 x Astrophytum Asterias cv. Kikko. Overall 75% germination rate across seeds received. Can't yet judge the nature of the cultivar seedlings, but I've grafted a few that have popped up as variegates.

A few more seedlings have been inspected and photographed as they reached 3 months. I sowed some lithops as an experiment at this time also, having previously killed hundreds of them in short order, so I'm pleasantly surprised with their current (incredibly overcrowded) progress.

Sowed 19th August 2018

Carnegeia Gigantea (Northern Rivers Seeds)

Four more pots have reached three months old. All have done well except for the Astrophytum myriostigma cv. Kikko, which had many aborted seedlings. I've never had great success with myriostigma.

Sowed 25th August 2018

Astrophytum coahuilense (Cactus-Hobby Brno)
Sowed: 25
Germinated: 21 (84%)
3 month survival: 21 (100%)

My Euphorbia bupleirifolia x polygona 'snowflake' hybrid seeds were harvested and sown today. Three seeds - no idea how they'll turn out.

Additionally, I conducted the three month count on many of my seedlings. Normally I'd photograph them to record their progress at three months, but there were too many and they all look like tiny astrophytum so there was no real need.

Sowed 31st August 2018

Astrophytum Asterias cv. Lizard Skin (Cactus Miroshnichenko)
Sowed: 52
Germinated: 45 (87%)
Three month survival: 38 (84%)

Astrophytum Asterias cv. Superkabuto (Star Astrophytum)
Sowed: 123
Germinated: 92 (75%)
Three month survival: 91 (99%)

Astrophytum Asterias cv. Ooibo Nudum (Star Astrophytum)
Sowed: 112
Germinated: 106 (95%)
Three month survival: 105 (99%)

Astrophytum Asterias cv. Kikko (Star Astrophytum)

Sowed: 100
Germinated: 79 (79%)
Three month survival: 79 (100%)

Astrophytum Myriostigma cv. Rokkotsu (Star Astrophytum)
Sowed: 100
Germinated: 82 (82%)
Three month survival: 71 (87%)

Copiapoa Dealbata (Koehres)
Sowed: 8
Germinated: 3 (38%)
Three month survival: 3 (100%)

Copiapoa Cinera v. Columna-Alba (Mesa Garden)

Sowed: 10
Germinated: 2 (20%)
Three month survival: 2 (100%)

Sowed 1st September 2018
These were all hard to germinate/grow species that I soaked in GA3 in order to induce germination. Germination results were very disappointing and keeping the plants that did germinate alive has been a struggle at best.

Tephrocactus Geometricus (Cactus-Hobby Brno)
Sowed: 22
Germinated: 5 (23%)
Three month survival: 1 (20% - grafted to pereskiopsis)

Austrocactus Bertinii (Koehres)
Sowed: 29
Germinated: 2 (7%)
Three month survival: 2 (100%)

Maihuenia Patagonica (Koehres)
Sowed: 20
Germinated: 2 (10%)
Three month survival: 0 (0%)

Im getting tephros from ADBPLS soon and plan to just soak the seeds in warm water overnight. I read somewhere that the crucial thing is getting them as soon as they germinate out of the humid atmosphere. Will get back with the results...

Based on my experience this year, that sounds right. The four that didn’t make it all succumbed to rot, despite sterilisation of the soil and disinfecting the seed coats.

If I sow these in future, I’ll keep the seeds in a warm, moist environment and transfer them individually to a separate, uncovered pot after germination.

Did some seedling grafts on pereskiopsis today:

1 x Epithelantha bokei
1 x Rimacactus laui
1 x Copiapoa hypogaea v. Lizard Skin
4 x Ariocarpus hybrid cultivars (mix of Godzilla, Cauliflower and variegated types)

After three days, seedling grafts have been removed from humidity. All are well-attached, although the Rimacactus has deflated noticeably.

Photos in order are: Copiapoa Hypogaea v. Lizard Skin, Ariocarpus cv. Cauliflower Variegata, Ariocarpus cv. Godzilla, Ariocarpus cv. Cauliflower Variegata, Epithelantha Bokei, Rimacactus Laui, Ariocarpus cv. Maruibo

copiapoa seem to have short viability time.
i've sowed a couple species from mesa over the last year, the ones i ordered before june had pretty good germination rate. i've sowed about 4 species since june (10 seeds a packet) and have a grand total of 3 seedlings (dealbata). maybe 6 months like haworthia. you would also think being harvested most likely in winter (in the northern hemisphere) they would come in fresh on the new seed lists in january. i dont know how long copiapoa fruits ripen to be viable however. maybe a long time like christmas cactus? so maybe these are a year old in january?
