A Few More Puchases

Post by SavageTurtle »

Hey. I bought 3 new cacti about 3 weeks ago, I originally thought 2 were Gymnocalycium and the other I have no idea about, but the more I look at the 2, the more I doubt they are Gymnocalycium. I have checked around here and elsewhere but am unable to ID them, hopefully someone can figure out what they are thanks. Plant 1 and 2 were the ones i believed were Gymno when I bought them.

#1 - maybe Coryphantha elephantidens
#2 - looks like Gymnocalycium baldianum
#3 - Parodia mammulosa

I think no 1 is either another Gymnocalycium or Thelocactus leucacanthus

1 & 2 look like solitary and massively offsetting variants of the same Gymno.
3 looks like P. mammulosa

Thanks all. Looks like we have a winner for plant 3 but the rest are dividing you as much as they are me. I originally thought plant 2 was a Gymnocalycium Baldianum but the spines were throwing me a bit, although I know Baldianum can be quite variable. Plant 1 is the one I really don't know about. One minute I think it's a gymno, then the next i don't know what it is. Hopefully they will all flower soon and we can get more of an indication.

Maybe better, closer images of #1 can give more? (I also am not sure if it is a gymno or not). I know that there are C. elephantidens that pups easaly around the base like that one but ultimately flowers will give it away :-)

#3 can be also narrowed to Parodia mammulosa ssp.turecekiana distinguished by longer central spines. I would suggest Gymnocalycium andreae for #1 if it blooms with bright yellow flowers

I think it is the form previously known as N. submammulosus Lucy. N. turecekiana has a lot larger heavier flattened spines.

Thank you everyone. I agree that plant 3 looks like a young Parodia mammulosa subs. submammulosa so I think that one is pretty nailed down. If the others flower in the next few months I will resurrect this post to post photos. I’m hoping they will turn out to be Gymnocalycium’s as I have started a nice little collection of them already and really want to get hold of as many as I can.

Judging by the notchings between areoles, #1 surely is a Gymno.

Hey again. Neither of the plants have flowers yet, but both have buds. Don't know if these pictures will help, but hoping. Thanks.
