Which countries are allowing or restricting shipping plants and seeds during the pandemic?

Post by Pereskiopsisdotcom »

I thought maybe we could make a living list of all of the countries that are allowing or disallowing parcels to export. For example, I went to make several seed orders this month and ones from Poland and Germany were canceled because the sellers said the government is not allowing outgoing parcels. One from Russia went through. Although everything is slowed down dramatically right now it would be nice to know who and where we can order from all in one place.

That's a great example of what I mean. You may have been able to order it, but if it's still stuck in SA from more than 2 months ago and it isn't the seller being negligent, then it is definitely the postal system denying export.

That was nearly the same situation in my case. I placed an order for cacti from Poland and the seller informed me that they would keep my plants growing and wait to package them up when the postal service allowed exports. I asked for a refund (and promptly received it). That was also 2 months ago and things haven't changed over there.

If this is "the new normal" and second waves are coming, it might be helpful to have a list of countries that are still exporting so those of us who wish to order seed or plants and have them this summer can still get them.

I think in the case of SA, it's mainly because there's no planes flying between destinations that they are unable to ship, although there is no clear indication of it being not possible, just sitting in the departure complex waiting for a plane. So I think until commercial flights will resume, not much will happen. In Europe it seems flights are resuming already or soon, but to and from SA will take a while still. Hope my seeds are OK!

There can't really be any such list because each country and each port or airport has a fluid situation that has changed many times over the past few weeks. It is not always an issue of the country's laws or guidelines, it is often an issue of truckers, mail drivers, pilots, and port authorities.

Any list you compile will be inaccurate within a few days.

I think the problem, as said above, could be less aircraft flying since most international post these days goes by air as cargo in passenger planes which are not flying at the moment. That means it either has to go by land or sea routes presently, or evidently not at all because maybe some postal systems now have a backlog due to little air travel?

I had a parcel of plants come to me in the UK from Germany OK in a week, but the UK is still in the EU at the moment.

Been lurking a while here, but this is my first post. This spring I ordered seeds from a grower in Thailand - the order was canceled; they said they couldn't ship to my address (northeast U.S.)due to covid19. I also ordered other seeds from a different grower in Thailand, and I received those fine, although they did take a month to get to me. I'm still waiting to get seeds from someone in the Ukraine. I ordered them on May 7; according to tracking they've left the Ukraine, but that's all I know. I've been hesitant to order plants internationally.
