Which Cactus

Post by gdlwyverex »

Looks a whole lot like pachycereus marginatus, BUT, with twice the number of ribs

Anyone know what it is?

Thanks

Yes Echinopsis Haku-Jo. It can have either normal or monstrose flowers. It is said to be a chimera where two plants tissues are merged. Something that can occasionally occur with grafting when the stock tissue merges with tissue of the scion. Evidently it was then rooted down and propagated from.

Fascinating. Coincidentally that Bing link shows a Cereus Cephalomacrostibas - a rare plant whose areoles look suspiciously wrong as well (not to mention the flowers). Another freak?

Apparently it's a Weberbauerocereus. Some other Weberbauerocereus have similar prominent areoles with lots of felt:

Eulychnias http://www.llifle.com/Encyclopedia/CACT ... nt-pieana and Oreocereus can also have close spaced areoles with lots of felt, possibly hidden under hair with Oreocereus.

OK, so maybe it's synonymous with Weberbauerocereus weberbaueri var. horridispinus.

When I purchased this, it was listed as Trichocereus cephalomacrostibas. It has a strong resemblance to trich.

Super plant! When it flowers you will know, maybe soon?
Trichocereus.net discusses this species, reckons it's Weberbauerocereus:

Could be a while before it flowers as the photo makes it look bigger than is - only 22 cm.
In the meantime this caught my attention :)
