Gymnocalycium schickendatzii var. pungens?

Post by Mrs.Green »

My most beautiful Gymno didn’t survive the winter  It was labeled G.schickendatzii var. pungens . Is this a valid name? Searching for it it comes up as a synonym for G.schickendatzii? I have found a G. schickendatzii for sale online here but the spines do look a lot smaller and less prominent than on my plant. Looking for photos on the net, the spination does look quite variable. The heavy spination and beautiful flowers on my Gymno, is what I am after, so the question is, is G.s the same plant as G.s.var pungens?

As a novice I can't answer your question, but I believe the correct species name is G schickendantzii with two n's. I don't know if that affected your online search.

loyall is right, it should be 'schickendantzii', but google should've corrected any misspelling.

Mrs.Green, I looked up var. pungens (syn. G pungens) and you're right, it is considered to be a synonym for Gymnocalycium schickendantzii (subs. schickendantzii). See a bit more details here: https://www.gymnocalycium.fr/gymnocalycium-pungens/. Essentially, this taxon was not accepted because it only differs from G. schickendantzii by the slightly longer and denser spines.

Thank you Loyall, you are correct, I did misspell the name here but it didn’t affect the search for the plant :)

Thank you MrXeric :) As it is the long spines who really attracted me to this Gymno ( but the flowers are lovely too) I will wait and see if the ‘right’ varity show up again localy. The ones seen on the photos from the online shop didn’t have the long spines my Gymno had.
