Carnigea gigantea?
Carnigea gigantea?
Hey guys,
Got this one couple of months ago, I'm thinking it's carnigea gigantea, but at the same time I'm not having my hopes up as the plant and I'm pretty sure you can't get this sort of a cactus at this price. Proper ID would be much appreciated.
Thank you!

Looks like pretty young saguaro.

I picked up a saguaro at a 99 Cents Only store a while back, so you never know. Anyway, these aren't difficult plants to grow from seed. You can end up with a hundred pretty easily and not know what to do with them.

Re: Carnigea gigantea?
Growing is the only problem with saguaros from seed. I've a half-dozen and they appear to enjoy staying juveniles
Re: Carnigea gigantea?
looks like a young healthy saquaro. Similar to mine at that stage. See thread. viewtopic.php?p=384810#p384810 Nice find.

They say the first hundred years are the worst for a Saguaro, after that they tend to get a move on!
However, a British Cactophile grew one bedded in and flowered it not long after this newspaper report was published in just over 40 years in Britain's dull climate. Main problem is growing such cacti in pots rather than beds or open ground tends to Bonsai them.

Re: Carnigea gigantea?
My three 20 years old Carnegiea are still about 10 centimeters high.
(But most of my cacti don't grow fast, I must add, as I hardly do any repotting and I don't water them much!)

I have about 30 y old saguaro which is about 20 cm high for my greatest shame.
Fortunately I've got possibility to grow some pot plants 4.5 thousand km south from here so I hope my saguaro growth rate will extremely encrease.

Re: Carnigea gigantea?
This one is about 15cm plant, it seems that it might be quite an old one then. Delighted it's a saguaro though, it gets rather hot in my greenhouse, so fingers crossed it will grow more than 1cm a year

Hi All
I had a long conversation a few weeks back with Clark Moorten. His second generation owner of Moortens Botanical Gardens in Palm Springs. We were talking about growing, etc. He said you can a Saguaro to sprout faster if you fertilize it every time you water. Use a very diluted mixture. Personally I'll let mine creep along for the next 25 yrs if I live that long.

I agree, it looks exactly like my seed grown one. It is a very slow grower
