Geologist cacti growers

Post by nes »

Just finished my last final exam for my B.S.
This summer I go to field camp then I will finally be out in the workforce. I want to work in either environmental consulting or water resources.

Out of curiosity, are there any Geologists active on this forum? If so, what industry/ field of Geology are you in?

Not a Geologist, but have a strong interest, especially in the local fluorescent minerals in Franklin/Ogdensburg NJ. I love looking at Mindat.org https://www.mindat.org/

Have you found a job yet?

Not a geologist, but have been in the rocks and mineral collecting bunch for over a decade now, been part of a few clubs, and have picked up a lot of information along the way, so an amateur mineralogist.
I have a more varied collection but that formation in Franklin, NJ is quite an odd one, lots of rare species though I'm more into things with crystal faces (though you can find some nice franklinite octahedrons there)
A cactus and succulent collector who especially likes Ariocarpus. …Though I have a bit of everything! Want some pictures? See my flickr! I also do art and such.

It shouldn't be such thing: "cacti eat rocks"!

Not any more: Hexalog is buried. Earth is not flat.
If your cacti mess in your job just forget about the job.

So a question for you geologist cacti growers:
Do you try out new minerals, rocks, etc for drainage of the cactus soil?

As for me I try to simplify culture as much as possible.
Cacti are very plastic plants and few of them need very special treatment.
Nothing can replace the sun,
but soil have to be porous and not rich in nitrogen,
and constant watering have to be avoided.

I use normal sandy soil volcanic in origin mixed with Pumice which is also volcanic . Mexican cactus come from sedimentary soils of limestone origin so I add Gypsum. I just started though a year or so ago well see if it makes a difference. No organic wood products. I've tried them and don't like the results.
