Re: Hana's cacti

Post by Hanazono »

Two cacti on photos are Astrophytum myriostigma v nudum cv khoyo, kikkou.

khoyo: autumn foliage
kikkou: tortoise shell

Since it is late autumn in here, they have started to turn their body colour. They will return body clour to greenish or green next summer.
They are not variegated and they rely on thier own-roots. When the cactus was old, it can not change the body colour but seedlings propagated from seeds harvested from old plants can change the body colour. The khoyo gene is transferred to off-springs.

The character of tortoise shell will be appeared when the cactus reached to a certain age.

The characters of khoyo and kikkou will transfer independently to off-springs.

I will start to water today for cacti in the large greenhouse, which takes 2~3 days. This watering is the last watering in this season and the restarting will be mid of August. The photo is a Wasington Navle orange tree planted in front of the large greenhouse. I will havest very soon. Watering of cacti is stopped every year in this time.

I completed watering of the large greenhouse yestrday afternoon. The photo is some of Astrophytm myriostigma cv Onzuka taken photo after the watering. I have kept around 40 plants which were propagated from seeds harvested from my plants. Although both parents are Onzuka, just 20% seedlings become Onzuka in my place. Since the base of Onzuka is myriostigma v tulense, my seedings are slender. I graft seedlings and make fat plants before degrafting.

The grafted character is remained on Ariocarpus species even if they were degrafted/rooted. On the other hand, off-sets removed from scions are not remained the character of grafted. The photo is rooted off-sets which do not show the character of grafted. They are retusus v furfuraceus cv Daruma seiji, in 8.5 cm square pots.

Cacti on the photo are Astrophytum hybrids, fukuryu banjyaku. They all are rooted off-sets. Since gene of ornatum is mixed in this hybrid, rooting is not difficult. Original ones were propagated from seeds given by my friend and so I do not know about the history of seeds. They show various faces.

They are in 8.5 cm square pots except two which are left end top and 2nd which are in 6.5 cm square pots currently. I lost two cacti last summer. These two will be reoptted into 8.5 cm square pots in September.

It seems winter comes earlier in this year. The room temperature of greenhouses were around 6C' in this morning. I took 3 photos in this morning. They are outdoor through a year including mid of winter.

The cactus on the photo is planted in my backyard. I removed weeds around the cactus and took a photo in this morning. I think the cactus is an Espostia species but I do not know the exact name. Althoug old parts died, off-sets have grown well.

New spines of Gymnocalycium species are developed in winter in my place. The room temperature in greenhouse is 6 'C in the morning but it reaches to around 30 'C in the afternoon. These temperature may suit Gymnocalycium.
I took two photos in this morning.

The cactus on 1st photo is a dgrafted and rooted Astrophytum myriostigma cv khoyo. The cactus has many off-sets and turned to monstrosa form partially. I once tried to remove all off-sets but I changed my plan. The cactus will just repot in September.

I rerooted many khoyo seedlings last summer which are growing quite well. I will be able to get enough khoyo without removing off-sets.

A degrafted Turbinicarpus alonsoi was in flower yesterday when was the begining of winter.
Normal alonsoi is small but this one is 13 cm in diameter because the cactus was grafted once.

Winter is the time to prepare for spring. One of jobs is washing old pots. Old pots are soaked in diluted bleach for one day and dried after washed with same liquid. The photo is pots under drying.
