Bird of Paradise
These are very common around here in SoCal and i imagine most everywhere else too? It's a fascinating bloom and the name sure fits it perfectly!
We had removed 2 large 10foot high/wide clusters to make room for our cactus, but we kept a few small clusters.
It's a good thing it has such a nice bloom, cause otherwise the plant is as exciting as a toothache
They stay open for days, maybe even weeks.

Nice Stelitzia i love these things. one of my favourite (non-cactus that is) flowers!
they are pretty common in gardens around here too.
heres a little funny story about them: in my garden in Perth, Western Australia where i lived 'til i was 5 we used to have a massive clump of the common one Darryl posted (S.reginae) many metres across and tall, it was growing right next to a fish pond lined with plastic. one summer when the plant got desperate for water its' vigorous roots burst through the plastic pond liner and nearly literally sucked the pond dry!
Daiv, the huge one with white flowers (S.nicolai from web searching) is understandably called the 'Giant Bird of Paradise' and is also quite common in gardens here, paticularly newly landscaped ones, but less so than S.reginae. the leaves on it really look like banana leaves! and it is commonly mistaken for a banana tree:
