Glochids for Christmas??

Post by daiv »

OK, do you all remember this post I made about an Opuntia my brother brought for me this fall?
daiv wrote:Well my brother showed up last night with this monster. It is the end of the season up here and his nursery friend off-loaded this Opuntia and some agave on him. Of course, he brings them to me. I don't know what business they have selling this Opuntia in Minnesota. There are probably less than 10 people in the whole state that are crazy enough to grow it.

They have it labeled as O. santa-rita, but I'm not positive on that. I think O. chlorotica or O. rufida are posibilities as well.

What are your thoughts?

Oh and the glochids on this thing are as bad as O. microdasys. I even got one in my lip somehow!
Well for Christmas day we drove to my parents place and brought along gifts for the family in a box that I had in the basement. Well... as we opened presents, everyone was complaining about finding glochids in their skin in various places. Everyone knew I was to blame, but we weren't sure how. Then my brother asked, "What box did you use to bring the presents?" Whoops!! I had meant to burn that box, but I used the box that the Opuntia came in to bring the presents. So everyone got glochids from thier gift as they unwrapped them!

What can you do about a mistake like that, but laugh, I say??? 8-[

Well, the rest of them didn't find it so funny, but I'm sure you guys will!

Perhaps the glochids would cause an infection with the "cacti-virus", so they get cacti collectors in the near future...

Your story remembers me of my austrian friends with their 2 big dogs... The dogs always passed trough a big bunch of Opuntias in their garden. What a surprise for my friends when they touched the dogs and got a lot of glochids in their hands and arms!!

Best regards

Unfortunately, they always know to look to the cactus guy when the mysterious itching starts!

Funny story, Daiv!

As for glochid stories, I don't find any story that includes me and glochids to be the least bit amusing! I do enjoy reading stories from others, now, THOSE are funny!

It would seem the saying, "It's the thought that counts" would just make things worse...

Alex, I've been exposing them for years. Just can't seem to get them hooked!
