Just found something new on the outskirts of my property. They range in height from about 12"-20". Echinocereus engelmannii possibly?

Here's a shot of a flower bud if this helps with ID. As usual, it never opened.

Another small clue in attempting to ID this until now unidentifiable cactus: It likes cool weather. It's going through a winter growth spurt and has recently shot off a new branch from the ground, which is now about 8" tall and growing. It also went through a brief flowering spell a couple weeks back. As usual, flowers only open enough to allow the stamen to protrude. Still looking for a name, a genus, anything. I'm guessing Cleistocactus, but....

Certainly Cleistocactus, maybe Cleistocactus tarijensis.
Where did you get it? I have seen Cleistocactus tarijensis for sale at Home depo before.

Cleistocactus tarijensis....

I see two different plants pictured with that name, one (golden) does resemble my plant about as much as anything I've seen, the other (silver) not so much. Thanks for the push, I'm starting to feel like we're getting it surrounded.

I just picked up a 1-gal plant that seems at least very similar to mine if not identical, labeled C. straussii by Altmans.

Apparently I am not the only one who finds it difficult to pin down Cleistocactus.

Did the E. englemanni bloom for you this spring?

Bad me, I forgot to go down and peek.

In regard to Cleistocactus, Altmans must agree. I walked into Home Depot, and there were all manner of 1-gal Cleistocactus there, only one was labeled with a species name, the rest were just "Cleistocactus". I grabbed a gold one and a very fuzzy silver one. I like Cleistocactus and don't see them offered very often, so this was a nice little find.

Here are a few cacti I've pinched from the natural desert part of my property to add to my landscape. And don't worry, there's plenty left! :D

Might this help with a Cleistocactus ID?

I think they usually go by C. hyalacanthus...
