Before seeing this I would bet that there are more women on the world tnan men. Obvously I was wrong.daiv wrote:Hey Dave, yes I think that Cactus and succulents are probably one of the few gardening categories where men outnumber the women. Maybe Bonsai too?
Here is the male/female ratio per age bracket from above:
Male:Female
Under 20 - 4.25:1
20-29 - 3:1
30-39 - 2.9:1
40-49 - 5.6:1
50-59 - 2.3:1
60-69 - 5.6:1
70+ - 3:0
So the closest ratio is among the 50-59 group and the average of all ages is 3.5 males per female.
Isn't that funny. Flowers are for girls (women) but most famous florists are men. Cooking is for women but most famous chefs are men.Bruce wrote:I've wondered for a long time whether there was some sort of gender bias in growing different sorts of plants. Apparently, cacti (and palms?) lean toward the masculine while a lot of the others lean feminine. I know it took me a long time to try African Violets - I thought there was something too "girly" about them, although I couldn't say why. Anyhow, it would be a great subject for somebody's doctoral thesis - or a great way to start a flame war.
Or men have more time to spend on a forum whilst they are waiting for their tea?John C wrote:Interesting ratios Daiv! I have noticed the male dominance in cactus growing, and also palm tree growing. I read through quite a discussion about the male dominance of palm growers on another forum and thought some of the ideas presented were rather interesting. In general it seems that men seem to take growing a particular group of plants rather seriously as is the case with palm and cactus growers. These are just my observations and may not be correct, but it seems like woman like the two plant groups to an extent and many "grow" them, but the men take it seriously and "collect" them. Maybe men are just more interested in joining a forum about said plants and showing them off, and women are not as interested in that. Who knows!
Have you only just noticed?Peterthecactusguy wrote:My guess, is that women are a different species and act differently then men
Hahaha! Could be...Peterthecactusguy wrote:My guess, is that women are a different species and act differently then men
