Weeds can indicate when the substrate is wet/dry, helping in the decision between water/do not water:

Weeds were growing with my Agave pumila recently and being a beginner to this hobby, I was still nervous about over- or underwatering even after reading about various methods of determining soil wetness. I increased my watering frequency when I observed that the weed was yellowing too quickly and my Agaves seem happier now.
