Daiv: In Mediterranean seashore yes, but in Ankara no. That was only a garden arrangement. In winter, they go to the greenhouse :)

that makes sense. but leaves pretty much anything up in the air.

Suley, great pics. I love how Opuntia seems to be universally invasive (some species). certainly got a winning design!!!

This thread is a real treat. Some fine pics in that lot.

What happened to the cuttings? Too much water?

Nice pics,
The L. williamsii pic that you have with all the roots is pretty neat too, and I agree with Darryl, the clump of the L. fricii you have is cool too!
Here's to you, all you insidious creatures of green..er I mean cacti.

we get ant nests in out pots, ants farming bugs on leaves/stems, crawling this way and that, eating various parts of plants....but this was a shock.

i was grafting up some L. willaismii crests and left a sliver on the mother plant. i usually put fresh grafts under shade cloth to help with not dehydrating and cooking in the sun of the greenhouse. i put the mommy in there as well.

tehse ans made their nest ON/IN the cut of the plant. i assume because it is so moist when cut, it made a good spot and being dark under the cloth it felt right for them. when my wife first took off the cloth she screamed, so i thought she knocked over a full try of fresh grafts, but i looked and there was about a 5mm thick coating on the cut surfaces. by the time i got my camera they started to flee, but here is what the cam got..

amazing critters, i feel bad having killed them all via drowning in a pond.

interestingly to note the ants did not eat away at any of the cactus, and there was no poop or any dirtiness, they are clean critters when they want to be. but because they were covered in eggs, orange spots formed of course. had it not been on such an expensive cactus i would have let them stay so i can see what they do (away from the greenhouse!)...but priorities

How bizarre, all those ants on there. In your previous set of photos, I love the lineup of the Lophs from small to large, and that Strombocactus disciformis fan crest is amazing.
