HI
Hi,
I just joined and love all the info here. I've always loved cacti and killed several as a child. Of late though my plants have been thriving and I got interested in cacti again. I have a few seedlings I started in August and a bunch more seedlings sprouting now. I'll post some pictures soon. Of course why I decided to do this in Massachusetts in November is anyone's guess, I'll have my hands full trying to keep them alive over the winter.
I'm sure I'll have lots of questions...

Hi Jennifer,
Glad to have you on board. I'd recommend putting Massachusetts in the location under your user profile, then when you have questions, we'll be able to give better advice. As you already observed - growing cacti there is a whole different ball game than it is in Arizona!

All Cacti are succulents, but not all succulents are Cacti
Welcome Jennifer!
The good/bad news is that most of us here haven't outgrown our ability to kill cacti! It happens, that's why you need lots and lots of plants as a buffer!
My sister, in Fall River, MA, sent me a piece of Opuntia humifusa that was growing in her yard, so there are some cacti to grow outdoors there. Check the Outdoor Cacti forum for cold-hardy cactus info.

Disclaimer: I'm in sunny Arizona, so any advice I give may not apply in your circumstances.
