Faucaria tigrina (Schwantes)

Growth Habits: Small clumping plant that grows new "leaves" in pairs 180 deg apart.older plants where the old leaf pairs have died back have the appearance of several rosettes on woody stems.

Scientific name; Faucaria tigrina

Common names: Tiger Jaws

Synonym: Mesembryanthemum tigrinum

Etymology: The genus name Faucaria comes from the Latin for 'jaws' and tigrina = tiger.

Origin: South Africa (Eastern Cape Province: Albany)

Light: Full sun to light shade.

Compost. A free draining standard cactus mix.

Water: Regular water in spring to autumn.

Flower: The normal flower colour is yellow but there is also a white flowered Faucaria.Faucaria tigrina has large 2 inches in diameter yellow flowers (5 cm) in late autumn, early winter. They need full sun to open, open around noon and close at night.

Min temp: Hardy to 25°F (-4°C), for short periods.

Cultivation: Easy to grow and remains quite a small plant.

Habitat. Eastern Cape subtropical thicket and karroid shrubland

Comments: A good plant for beginners as it is not very demanding and takes up little room. Faucaria tigrina is easy to grow from seed and will make a flowering size plant in 18 months to 2 years.lt will flower in the autumn.
