New backyard Beds

Post by Tony »

I started an almost complete renovation of my backyard last week. Its been pretty much an, if its a plant, grow it kind of a deal up until now but finally Im taking the drought tolerant, mostly succulent and natives route.
The first thing I did is started selling off my orchid collection and moved the fish pond that was inside the greenhouse, out into the backyard, Cause I gotta have my fish.
Now the greenhouse will be used mostly for growing epi's and succulent seedlings.
And the grass in the backyard? Well its days are numbered.

Here's the freshly laid pathway and fish pond just after it rained last week. I'll be filling the cracks with D/G.

Here is one of the new bed's with all the grass removed. The native soil is a sandy loam that drains well, but I will be mixing in about 50% Decomposed granite to about the depth of 8/10 inches deep. I havent mixed in the Decomposed granite yet, but its a start. My plan is to kill the rest of the grass with round up Weed killer and then top dress everything with D/G after its good and dead. :D

The pond is still a little cloudy after my 4 year old found out how much fun it was to throw BIG dirt clods in there while dad wasnt around.  We are both having a lot of fun!
I will be updating as it progresses. :)

Tony,
I thought your backyard was very nice as it was, but I know it will be nice with the new setup too and exciting to see the cacti in the ground!

I Like the Desert theme. It will show off your cactus collection very well. :D

Looks good. Desert themes rock! 8)

I've never quite understood the appeal of grass. Why plant something that requires so much maintenance when there are plenty of other ground covers that are just as nice to sit or walk on?

Thanks everyone!
Well I left work early today, picked up a scoop of D/G on the way home and worked it in, so the island bed is just about ready to plant. I went ahead and started to topdress the pathway and around the desert oasis. Eventually everything will look somewhat like this. Not sure if im going to be completly happy with the sandstone pavers, still have a bunch to add here and there.

Picked up a few craigs list freebee columners last week from somewhere in the lake Elsinore area. Theyre not the cleanest cac's around, but the timing and the price was right.

Cant wait till tommorow when I can start laying out where Im going to plant stuff. :D

does that knobby one have a particular name? Or is it just a "monstrose cereus." Those are going to do great planted out, Tony. The whole deal looks amazing.
