Aloe arculeata
Great plants, Tony! I try not to dream of 9 mos. of summer . I'm more in Daiv's environ except probably wetter . The Aloe arculeata caught my eye because I had just "discovered" this Aloe a couple of weeks ago & it got included in an order from SuccSeed 2 days ago. Using "baggie" method - any tips or caveats?

Once bitten by the cactus collecting/growing bug, there is no known cure!
There's no 12 step programme for Cactaholics...so I shall just have to get some more!!

The A. aculeata was a few years old when I got it from the HBG, so I dont have any seed growing experience with this species yet.
But I have grown a handful of Aloes from seed and I have had success starting them with the baggie method and then a week or two after germination, totally exposing them and misting them from then on.
My own personal experience with growing most non cacti succulents has been that this method works the best for me here, but Im still learning and experimenting...

Tony, you have done some fantastic work on your yard. It makes me wish that Michigan was more like California so that I could attempt a project like that. I thoroughly enjoyed your pictures.TFS

Thanks James!
IT sure makes it easy when you can just plant them in the ground and let them do their thing.
Really the only concerns are the occasional wet, frosty mornings and gophers.

Checking back in...always enjoy returning to your post. Any chance of update pics to see how things are going? Bet everything have exploded since first starting the project.
Re: New backyard Beds
Tony, didn't know about this thread until Joel bumped it. Now I can picture things much better. When I was over you told me about the work you did, but without seeing how it looked before it was hard to relate. Really impressive taking it from that to what you have now!
I'm now selling plants on Ebay. Check it out! Kyle's Plants
Re: New backyard Beds
Just checking in to see how your garden is growing....if any additions or changes. Your thread with great transformation pics really gave me ideas. Any chance of more pics to see how your garden is going?
Re: New backyard Beds
Yes, I will post more before and after shots when I get a chance. I haven't made many new additions in quite some time, but I have made a few subtractions!Joel143 wrote:Just checking in to see how your garden is growing....if any additions or changes. Subtractions oh no. Hope nothing bad took place whereby you lost plants. Figured some cactus may have outgrew their area of the garden.
Re: New backyard Beds
Well for starters, Cereus peruvianus in all of its forms has been practically banished forever. I still have one monstrose plant, but it wont be around much longer, Aloe dichotoma grew to 6 feet tall in three years so I traded it to out2searob for a three foot tall, 8 headed pachypodium lamerii that will remain in a pot.Joel143 wrote:Subtractions oh no. There will probably be a lot more moving out in the next year.

I will try and put together some before and after shots someday but I just dont have the time right now.
Here are some random images of the backyard a few weeks ago after an all night soaking.
Aloe dichotoma was planted right where the aloe microstigma is now in the bottom center of this image. Here are a few benches while Im at it.
Here are a few more recent pix.
