What is growing in the garden?

Post by wardplace »

Hello - I would appreciate help in identifying our unknown cactus. My Mom has had them - along with many others - for several years now and has forgotten what they are called. There are others - so many different varieties of prickly pear and choya! I am planning on starting them in our new xeriscape garden -no more dead grass! Since we live in the middle of the Mojave Desert, it seems like a pretty good plan!

Hello and welcome to the board!

I first picture is a little hard to see the plant, but it looks like a Pterocactus. Can you get a better shot on that one?

The second is Tephrocactus articulatus var. diadematus unless I'm missing something.

Nice plants, feel free to post more pictures, we'd all like to see them I'm sure.

Thank you for the information. I will get another photo of the "Pterocactus" after it stops raining - again. I'm sure I'll be around the site because we have a long way to go before we get our gardens in. I would like to put signs on the plants and being new to desert gardening, I have a lot to learn!

I'll send more photos - some from the wild.

Thanks again.

 You might also want to trade cuttings with some folks on the forum here too.

I found another photo of the "Pterocactus" in bloom. I hope this photo provides a better view. This one seems to grow quite easily.. because there is lots of it! Sorry about the delay in getting the photo, I spent a couple days in CA this week.

I imagine sharing clippings would be a good way to establish a good cactus garden! Is there a best time to do that?
