I decided to go with a close-up shot of the spines on my Mammillaria sanchez-mejoradae. This plant is currently in a 1 inch pot. It measures 1/2" x 1/2".

This is just a very close-up macro. No microscope is used - just camera, lightbox and dried segment of Schlumbergera x buckleyi.
